summertime morning waking

Just wondered if everyone finds their kids wake earlier during the summer months? Dd is 19 months and I remember this happening last summer and it seems to have started happening again now. She usually sleeps til around 7.15 but is now awake between 6-6.30 and is pretty knackered by mid-morning. I've done the usual blackout curtain stuff and her room is pretty dark but still she wakes. Maybe it's the bird song. Anyway I just wondered how common this is and if anyone ever has found a miracle cure!!

Welcome to MN, alimc! I'd definitely try closing the windows. It would be a disaster for dd if we left them open. You'd be amazed how the 'world' starts waking up between 5-6am which is also a natural period of light sleep for all of us, so if your dd is a bit of a light sleeper then this may be what's waking her. On hot nights I leave dd's windows open til the last minute then put her fan on which generally makes the air cooler anyway. Give it a go and let us know how you get on?

Dd slept til 7 again this morning so I can't really complain right now. Diligent blackouting and as much silence as possible are the only things I have to offer as advice I'm afraid. And even that doesn't always work ...

she normally stirs once in the night and goes back to sleep quite quickly, recently its been solid nights. this morn it was 6.30, yesterday 7 both night in her cot. i think her teeth may have been at her sat night.
she was wrecked at 11.10 today, cpmletely calmed down infront of t.v into a stare, so i put her up but she only slept 1 1/2 hr! gone to bed now at 8. i think i may get use to it.
my dd was born 4/10!

maomao - she rubbed cream into my belly this evening and kissed the belly button. i am having mini panic attackes about b/feeding baby no2 , when feeds can go on for ages in the beginning and how will i manage eek, off to checkout those type of threads!
and get a gaviscon tab - j the heartburn tonight!

popsycal · 31/05/2004 20:23

just had a brill idea - when i go back to work i am going to bring home some huge sheets of black sugar paper and blue tac them to the window on a night!

bootsmonkey · 01/06/2004 08:38

My DD has woken the last three mornings at 5.00am and I am frazzled.

She has just finished cutting her LAST Tooth and we were all looking forward to some good sleep at last.........

Poo.

She has blackout blinds, but we may just have to double and triple up!

strangerthanfiction · 01/06/2004 12:19

How old is she Bootsmonkey?

Popsycal, black sugar paper won't cut the light out properly. I recommend getting blackout cloth from your local haberdashery and cutting it to the size of the window panes and then velcroing it down that way you can peel it off if you want to let some light in.

Well, dd did another 7am start today so for almost a week now she's been getting a straight 11 hour sleep. The thing is she still seems very tired in the morning and I'm having to give her lunch at 11am and put her down to sleep by 12 at the latest or she goes all loopy on me. Then of course she's awake again before 2 so is knackered by teatime. Can't win can you?

Hermykne, by the way, dd was born on 10/10/02 so just 6 days younger than your dd! Is yours a real little chatterbox now? Dd never stops talking. It's very cute but also rather tiring if you've been up since the early morning. I find myself chatting back sort of on automatic pilot.

Dd slept til 8am this morning!!! Hurray!!!

bbensley · 02/06/2004 10:23

We went back to 7am too

strangerthanfiction · 02/06/2004 10:30

I wonder what was in the air this morning ... maybe a bird silence conspiracy ...

throckenholt · 02/06/2004 10:48

not in my neck of the woods - was woken at 5.30 by a very loud bird singing it's heart out - not very welcome !

MrsDoolittle · 02/06/2004 10:51

Crows are the worst. Followed very closely by magpies!!!

strangerthanfiction · 02/06/2004 11:28

Oh, yes, crows are hellish. I don't think I've heard a magpie. They seemed to be very silent in London this morning anyway. Regional crow lie-in?

OP posts:
magnum · 02/06/2004 11:32

I've had one lonesome magpie in my garden for ages. Keep trying to look for his friend as I'm now convinced terrible luck is coming my way

strangerthanfiction · 02/06/2004 11:54

So what's a magpie sound like?

OP posts:
magnum · 02/06/2004 11:55

mine doesn't make any noise

MrsDoolittle · 02/06/2004 12:07

Lucky you magnum!! They seem to cackle, like a cha cha cha sound !?

strangerthanfiction · 02/06/2004 12:36

cha cha cha sounds kind of funky ...

Magnum's The Silent Magpie, sounds like a poem.

a few nice lies ins for you then! dd is a babblebox at the moment and everthing is dada's all day long and i'm like do i not live here!
anyway she too has slept til 7.30 but her night sleep is unsettled at the mo, but i think the incisors are coming thru on top.

strangerthanfiction · 05/06/2004 12:05

Hermykne, good to hear from you. Sorry your dd's having restless sleep, we're awaiting incisors too. Since she got her molars in around 2 months ago we haven't seen any real signs of new teeth yet. Dd's been a mummy's girl so far, shrieks when I leave the room, etc. But she's getting increasingly keen on daddy now, prefers him to carry her when we're walking, prefers holding his hand when walking etc. All of which is fine by me as he loves it, she loves it, and my arms get a rest!

Dare I say it ... but dd hasn't woken before 7 now for a good couple of weeks. Occasionally she's even slept in until almost 8am which is such a wonderful relief.

just posted to u on ur other thread!
i got til 8 tis morn but she woke at 6.30 told her no go back to sleep and she did but she was wrecked. i would just love to know why exactly their little clocks wake them!

alimc · 10/06/2004 16:39

Thanks for your replies. We've managed 6.30am for the last week or so (after a 4.30am horror!), achieved by velcro-ing blackout onto window frame, shutting the window and leaving 2 dummies in her cot when we go to bed. We weaned her off the dummy to go to sleep a few months ago and she still doesn't need it to get to sleep but if she wakes up at 5.30am she tends to find it and go back to sleep rather than shout for us. She's much less grumpy for getting that extra hour as well. So, thanks for all your advice - it really helped, and it's nice to know that we're not the only ones suffering!

strangerthanfiction · 10/06/2004 21:03

Great news alimc. Dd's stuck to not waking before 7am so far thank goodness! She still seems tired in the mornings but is roughly getting through til lunch then having her sleep and much better in the afternoon.

strangerthanfiction · 20/06/2004 20:29

Urg ... it's been creeping earlier and earlier again for me. Today 6.15. Why oh why? Anyone else having any problems?

OP posts:
bbensley · 20/06/2004 20:39

same here altho last two have been 7am but b4 was 5:50. I can ignore her for about half an hour but then i have to get up

musica · 20/06/2004 20:44

We were 5.30 this morning. I got up with the kids - dh stayed asleep in bed - I suggested we got a blackout blind, and he said....'but they've not been having problems waking up early...'????!!!! I nearly strangled him.
