My 6 month old Steve McQueen

This is my first first post and as a dad i hope i am not breaking any rules being here. In short me and my wife have a 6 month old boy called William who has always been extremely advanced for his age. About 5 days ago over Christmas William developed the ability to stand and is able to lift himself up into a standing position. He has always been a problematic sleeper and often fights when he is extremely tired. Tonight when my wife was at work i followed our nightly routine only to hear lots of noise over the babycom. On going upstairs I found him climbing out of the cot trying to get into our bed which is immediatly next to it.

I am at my wits end, as soon as i try and lie him down and give him water or milk. He merely drinks about half and then starts screaming, fighting to try and get up either onto all fours or onto his feet. I think he is fustrated about not being able to stay mobile and my lying him down obviously is not what he wants. I have been told about various techniques to try and aid a restful sleep but i fear my routine is shot to pieces. I have lowered his cot to as close to the floor as possible and also raised the sides as high as they will go.

Please help me stop this constant nightly "Great Escape" and screaming.

Matt

does he nap in the daytime?

or - could be that he just can't stop himself getting on with standing & once the skill isn't new anymore he'll stop (could start something new as he's a fast learner!!)

Have you thought about using a baby sleeping bag. Might make it more difficult to pull himself up.

Having just caught him in the act...

linked for you

Do you think he would be able to pull himself up though - would need some good arm strength there as very high compared to him.

pulling to standing can be normal for some babies that age, my Ds was the same and was walking unaided by 8.5mths. We had to move him ot a toddler bed by 12mths as he learnt how to bounce to get higher over cot side. As long as he isnt getting any higher over the cot then I wouldnt worry yet. Would also agree about thinking of sleeping bag for him.

My DS1 stood quite early in the cot too. Bars were quite high up but he would get onto his knees the reach up!
He was never a good sleeper so i can't advise you!

I have another early stander, hence recomendation of sleeping bag. They can stand, and even walk in them, but makes it harder especially in these early learning months.

No recommendations of sleep though; aother poor sleeper here.

He is able to climb up and over, having witnessed him do it earlier. I have now put him in a sleeping pod but he is seriously unhappy, screaming, for what has been about 40 minutes.

He doesnt cry himself out and can go on and on and on.

I keep giving him water, and milk and burp him but alas nothing will calm him down. Does anyone have some suggestions i might try? I bath him as part of his routine and then lie him down to a lullaby and some milk.

What does Ds mean pardon my ignorance but this my first post

I would go and sit in his room, next to the cot, and every time he pulls up, lie him down, and shush nd sooth him.

It might work, it might not. I hope it does though.

DS - dearest/darling son

Can he walk or crawl at all yet? If not you could try a mattress on the floor for a while to see if that gets him bored. Or a travel cot with mesh sides, rather than bars to climb?

colditz idea sounds good to try. may take time and patience, and a few days, but may also work inthe end.
