Putting baby down sleepy but awake.

I know someone whose baby sleeps a lot. She says she puts the baby in his cot and he falls asleep all by himself. Apparantly, her secret is that she has put him down sleepy but awake from day one. However, I cannot imagine that any newborn would fall asleep of their own accord when placed in their crib awake? She must have left him to cry, right? Or am I wrong?

This person also claims her DS never crys, which also leads me to believe he's been left to cry and learnt that no one will come?

I think its largely luck of the draw.

DD has done this from about 11 weeks but I genuinely don't think its anything we've done, its just luck.

But if somebody feels they are using a technique to achieve this they'll never know whether it was always going to happen with that baby or not.

I possibly have the easiest baby in the world, always self settles, cries probably once a week! I have never ever left her to cry, she is just incredibly content, I don't think that makes me mother of the year and probably mainly down to luck but actually I will take some of the credit for her, and I would be very upset if a supposed friend came online and and accused me of lying or neglecting my baby.

My ds always fell asleep by himself from awake / sleepy in his cot from birth. He never cried when he awoke so I used to have 2 pop in every 5 minutes to check if he was up or not otherwise he'd probably have stayed there for half the day. As a school aged child now he's very similar. Quiet and likes to lie in bed contemplating life. Even as a baby he only wanted his own company when falling asleep. He simply couldn't on me.

So they do exist but I suspect unless I'd have had a baby like this I'd never have believed they existed.

His sister was / is the polar opposite..... She damn near drove me to the edge of insanity, but that's a different story!

To answer your other point. It MAY be that her actions have helped towards baby self settling but it's more likely your friends baby is just an easy going, quiet baby. They do exist.

I only read the op and post #2 but they're all so different. Very early on I was at a bf support thing and a mum put her baby down and everyone watched agog as baby drifted off. She said, not her, 'twas baby and first two did NOT do this! I also recently spoke to a mother of a 3 year old and a 6 year old. 6 year old was a never sleeper. 3 year old had to be kept cool/ toes tickled etc as would doze off on changing mat if back turned for a minute.

I think it's best to have it this way round Grin
