Help - toddler sleep weirdness

DS, who's just turned 2, has suddenly started waking in the middle of the night for 2-3 hours at a time. He's not distressed, just seems very alert, and wants to play. If left to it in his cot, he screams the house down, but settles if one of us cuddles and rocks him, which we've ended up doing more than I'd like as we have an older dc whom I'm terrified he'll disturb. He normally falls back asleep eventually, and might make up for some of the missed time by sleeping in by an hour or so. This has been going on since December, but stopped for a couple of weeks - it's now returned Sad

For context, we've tried limiting his lunchtime nap to a max of 1hour, which briefly did seem to help (see the stopping for a couple of weeks above) but now doesn't seem to make much difference. He is quite full of cold at the moment, and extremely dribbly - have tried ibuprofen / calpol in case he's in pain with sore throat or teeth, but doesn't seem to change things either. Is there a sleep regression at this age? Can anyone offer any words of advice? Getting extremely tired ...

What time does he go to bed?

ThenBellaDidSomethingVeryKind · 17/02/2016 08:16

Normally about 7pm... Then nap of 1 hr at some point between 12 and 2

We had this happen to us recently and turns out DS was overtired when going to bed.

The only difference for us though is that he had just dropped his daytime nap and we hadn't adjusted his evening bedtime. He's now falling asleep just after 6.30pm instead of closer to 7.30pm and this has meant he's sleeping through again.

Ok, thank you - that is something worth considering...

Have you considered the need to toilet, full bladder wet nappy?

Hi, he's still in nappies, and I always check to make sure he's not soiled...

Mine does this sometimes - awful! I don't let him sleep in to make up for it, though - I get him up at his usual time, to try and get him back on track. Things that seem to help us are making sure he's had a good walk during the day, and drastically limiting screen time.

Thank you all so much. I'm trying to limit his naps to an hour max, and to make sure we get out for some fresh air every day. Things seem to be improving
