14 mth Old DS - Problems at Sleeptime When I Leave the Room

DS has always been brilliant at bedtime - but what the hell is going on this week?

After his bath he has a bottle in his bedroom, a story, cuddles, "twinkle star", and then he goes into his cot. I then leave the room and shut the door. He will then go straight to sleep until 7am the next morning.

Since last Saturday he screams when I leave the room, pulls himself out of the covers and stands up. No matter how tired he has been, he does not go to sleep for at least 1.5 hrs. We have to constantly go upstairs and lie him back down.

Then, around 3am he wakes up crying and the whole bloody routine starts all over again. He doesn't go back to sleep at all so DH takes him downstairs at 6am when DH gets ready for work.

Tonight I had to sit in his room until he went to sleep just to ensure that he didn't get himself all worked up again.

DS has had a poorly chest since Monday and the coughing is waking him at 3am - do you think this could be a phase related to his illness or could this be the start of something new?

Should I try CC, and if so, what does it entail?

I think he has got used to waking up at 3am, and that his chest is still playing him up and making it hard for him to settle.
How about giving him a dose of drowsy cough medicine like Tixylix to knock him out and relieve the cough.
Good luck

There are many threads on controlled crying --- try doing a search. Here's one of the more recent ones . I also would do as Suzy suggests and try the Tixylix.

Thanks for the advice suzy.

Have been giving him Medised which contains a mild sedative.

Tonight at bedtime he was given : antibiotics, inhaler, simple linctus, pednisolone steroids and medised!

Just hope he gets a good night's sleep. I always believe that the body repairs itself during sleep.

Hopefully then I can start fixing the problem of getting him off to sleep. Hope I haven't made a rod for my own back by sitting with him until he falls asleep.

Blimey, don't forget to wake him up at 7 then
(only teasing I would do the same)
