Hi

What tog sleeping bag should be used at this time of year please what should my baby wear underneath it? Our room is about 20 degrees and we always have a fan on as I am worried about over heating her. My dh Is away and I went to stay with my parents last night and I think they were shocked she was only wearing a babygrow and a 0.5 tog peanut swaddle. I have always been paranoid about overheating her because of SIDS but now I feel guilty she may be cold at night. I have found it very hard to get her to sleep more than an hour or two at a time, could this be why? Thank you in advance.

I think it all depends on the baby, but as a guide, the Gro Company recommend a baby should wear two layers (no legs) with a 1 tog and just a long sleeved vest with a 2.5 tog. You can find their guidelines with a table etc here: gro.co.uk/pages/what-to-wear

With regards to the waking up, how old is your DD? My DS is 20 weeks and only this week started sleeping longer than 2 hours at a time (praying that it continues!) but again, every baby is different.

So it could be that she is too cold but I think you can check your DD's temperature by feeling her back or chest (hands will feel cold - this is normal) and determine whether she is too warm or cold. Just for comparison my DS is in a 2.5 tog Gro Bag plus baby grow and our room is at 17 degrees C.

Hope this helps x

I would only use a 0.5 tog in the very height of summer - the maybe 2 weeks of sweltering weather we get in England. For the bulk of the summer I use a 1.0 tog sleeping bag and have now (in autumn) moved to a 2.5 tog sleeping bag.

What is worn under the sleeping bag depends on the child, I find. My four children have all been different. DC1 liked to be cooler thanyou would expect. Even now as an 11 year old she is always too hot. DC2 always liked to be warmer than expected. Even now aged 10 you'll often find him wrapped in a blanket on the sofa. DC3 was textbook in terms of temperature preference and DC4 likes to be a little warmer than expected, but dislikes being too warm.

My 12 month old (DC4) is in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag with long sleeved vest. As the weather gets colder she'll be in a sleepsuit instead of l/s vest and if very cold it will be s/l vest plus sleepsuit.

Ds was born in December and, also terrified about SIDS we put him in next to nothing- a sleepsuit and 1 layer of cellular blanket- when we were in pjs, hot water bottle and big thick duvet! Needless to say he slept much better when my sister told us to wrap him up a bit. Dd is 12 weeks and is in a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog gro bag. when I feel the back of her neck she's warm but not hot or sweaty.

Hello! Thank you all for your replies. I feel guilty that the poor little mite has probably been freezing! She is now in a long sleeve sleepsuit and a 1.5 tog sleeping bag...by the sounds of it she should be in a 2.5!

I used a 0.5tog when we were on holiday in a hot country. It is for high room temperatures, not what we have just now.

My ds is in a 2.5 tog bag a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit our room is quite chilly though. I'd always have at least a long sleeve vest on to stop arms getting chilly
