Any tips to encourage a 2 year to allow themselves to be covered at night?

In the spring we gave DS (2) a duvet in his cot and he quite liked it (he likes to sleep on his tummy with his legs 'frogleted' up so sleeping bags became too restrictive - not lengthwise but widthwise - and he hated them). He kicked it off sometimes at night but quite liked to snuggle down under it when going to sleep. Then the warmer weather came and he didn't want to be covered at all - which was fine. Now it is starting to get cooler again at night and we live in an old Victorian house that is hard to keep warm, but if we so much as try to cover him with a sheet let alone a blanket or a duvet at bedtime or nap time he thrashes like mad and screams blue murder till it is off. I know that if need be we can get him velour pyjamas/put a heater in his room/sneak in and cover him when asleep etc but would love to help him actually enjoy snuggling under a blanket/duvet again and just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas? (I'm a first poster so be gentle with me please! Smile)

Watching with interest as my 2 yr old is the same! We currently sneak in and cover him once asleep.
My other tactic (which isn't working!) is whenever we read a book where someone is in bed I comment on it so 'ooooo look at peppa pig all warm and cosy under her duvet'!!

Another one watching as nearly 2 yo doing the same!

If he wakes up cold won't he just out the duvet back on? Or would he start screeching?

Tucking the foot and and one long side of the duvet under the mattress will make it easier for him to cover and uncover himself without it ending up in a ball or on the floor.

Gro bag company does a gro duvet which zips the duvet to the sheet so they can't kick it off easily. Was going to get it for ds for exact same reasons

DS wears a twinkle tog from dreamgenii. They are brilliant but not cheap! I tried to get another one for this year on eBay and couldn't get one in his size so I sewed patches on the knees and it will go through another Winter I think.

I just leave her to it. "Do you want your squirrels on? (Squirrels on cover) no? OK.

Oh okay you've changed your mind.

I would just trust that he will have it on when he's cold. I hate duvets/blankets too. Still sleeping in short pj's with no cover atm. I'll put the duvet on me when I feel I need it.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 27/09/2015 09:54

I'm 25 and I sleep without pjs and often can't get to sleep with the duvet or blanket on me. Leave it close so he can pull it on if he needs too. It's personal preference, especially if he sleeps in odd positions.

I am trying the inspiration method too starfish but without success so far! Thinking of visiting one of his little friend's bedrooms with him to see their snuggly duvet in cot so hopefully he might like the idea more?!

Unfortunately Goldplated he won't even allow the duvet in the cot, tucked in or not!

Thanks for the ideas - will definitely check out the twinkle tog. Am thinking I am just going to have to bite the bullet and go either for one of those or the gro duvet.....maybe as soon as I do he'll decide he likes the normal duvet (sod's law and all that...)

My 3.5 yr old still won't tolerate a fleece blanket. He wears a tshirt, fleece onesie and socks.

ffffffedup · 27/09/2015 21:27

Will he watch a film that maybe you could cuddle under a blanket / duvet in the day to get him used to it. He's only 2 he might not know that a duvet means warmth at night if you can get him comfortable with it during the day he might be more inclined to cuddle up with it at night

Buffnutter · 28/09/2015 15:29

It's worth a try Fedup. He'll happily come under the duvet on our bed on weekend mornings to read stories so he definitely gets the concept - just doesn't like the practice!
