Hi I don't normally post on this kinda stuff but I'm really struggling.
My son is 17 months old and since he was 4 months old he's been difficult with sleeping. He decided he didn't want his dummy from about 6 months onwards and try as hard as I may there is nothing that soothes him. (I've tried toys, blankets ect)
Since March I have noticed he seems to have a snuffly nose and even when his nose is fine he breaths quite heavy (almost like darth vadar) It was around the time he started nursery so I put it down to colds and maybe hay fever. It's been bad on and off depending on if he has a cold but when he doesn't he has been known to self sooth and even sleep through the night a couple of times.
He's not overly clingy and normaly a very happy boy. He does however hate his bum being changed and will wiggle away and cry.
In the last 2 weeks he has a cold and he has been struggling with sleep worse then ever (he was better as a newborn baby!) he will wake every 2 hours (never gets to 3) he will scream and scream, even holding him and cuddling him he will still scream himself to sleep. The only time he is happy is when he is up right with his head on my shoulders but he can't fall asleep like that. It seems like he hates being on his back!
Today he has been so grumpy and just sat watch TV most of the day which is not like him he is normally so active it's a struggle to get him to sit still long enough to watch even a 10 minute show!
As I said earlier I've noticed his breathing is heavier than I think it should be, also I have noticed occasionally when he is sleeping he will stop and then breath out of his mouth after 10 seconds or so. There are all sorts of issues that run in the family his sister has hay fever and asthma and his grandad also had enlarged adenoids and had to have them removed.
I'm very aware of being an over worried mum and that's why I hAve waited a while to see if it clears up but I have a gut instinct that is telling me it's not quite right. Other family members have noticed aswell which reassures me.
I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this or any expierence with things like enlarged adenoids or even sleep apnea? Thank you x

I have just been through the investigation for sleep apnoea with my DD and found she doesn't have it- however I think she definitely did in the winter and it had all cleared up prior to the test. The test for us was an overnight oxygen study so got the monitor from the hospital to take home. It was stuck onto DD's toe. She didn't even notice it. The consultant said the treatment would be surgery to remove tonsils if it was positive but obviously not needed now so that's great. It can take a while for tonsils/adenoids to settle after a viral illness so I would bear that in mind too. My DD had a horrendous illness around her second birthday which upset her sleep for months after so I feel your pain!

Any tips on helping them sleep? He won't sleep longer than 2 hours and it takes at least an hour to get him to sleep if he stays asleep x
