My 14 month old daughter has recently decided to wake up every night, any time after midnight, and it's taking me 1- 3 hours to get her back to sleep!

She was previously a good sleeper. We gave her a dream feed at 11pm up until she turned 1, and after dropping that feed she normally slept for 11-12 hours straight from c.7:30pm-7am.

However, about 10 days ago, the wake ups started. She is wide awake and sometimes starts smiling when I go to her, and I then rock her back to sleep, but it takes a long time. She normally falls asleep on me after about 30 mins but then wakes when I put her down, and screams if I don't pick her up again.

I sometimes give her Kalpol, sometimes a drink of water, sometimes change her nappy and sometimes give her teething gel, but I don't think any one of these makes a difference and I certainly don't want to start giving her Kalpol every night. She loves the sweet taste of Kalpol!

I keep the room dark, quiet and don't interact with her. I just sit rocking her, in her room. She sleeps 1.5 - 2 hours during the daytime and doesn't sleep later than 3pm.

The only other thing to mention is that I have recently started using the 2.5 tog sleeping bag, in case she was getting cold, but this too doesn't seem to make a difference

I don't really want to try the "controlled crying" method as it seems extreme, considering she has previously slept well. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Is this common / normal?

Many thanks

I would start soothing her while she is lying in the cot, rather than you holding/rocking her.
