Hello, some words of wisdom please! My son has decided that afternoon naps are a no no. He's definitely not ready for it yet.

He has increased his am nap over the last week or so to 1.5 - 2hrs but this still isn't enough for him. He's a major grump come dinner time and today was the worst I've ever seen him.

I've tried putting him down at the usual pm time but he just sobs his heart out.

Have also tried an earlier bedtime to compensate but he just wakes earlier.

He used to sleep from around 8.30pm til 6am nap at 10am for an hour and again at 3pm.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to make his am nap later. Any tips would be great :-D

Thank you

My 17mo naps 11am until 12.30 - 1ish then is in bed asleep by 7pm. Try putting him down for nap later. I did it gradually by moving it 10 - 15 minutes later every few days.

He only needs one nap. You've done well to carry on with two naps this long. One 1.5/2hour nap In the middle of the day. That way he'll burn out later in the morning but still be tired for bed. The day will be broken into two chunks so he'll be less grouchy and tired over the course of the day.

DS is 20mo. Bed at 7.30/8, up at 5/6. Nap 12.30 - 2pm after a 12pm lunch.

One nap is enough by this point, maybe push the morning nap back a bit and make it a single midday ish nap

Try lunch early for a while (11am?) then nap straight after. You're incredibly lucky, my DC dropped two naps to one nap age around 12 months!

Mine dropped to one nap at 12 months! The am nap gradually got later and later until there was no time for a pm one. From 12 months she was napped 1-3 (she's 22 months now)

Thank you so much for the replies. Wow I didn't realise quite how lucky I was!!

I had read that one nap was OK at this age, I just assumed that he wasn't ready with all the grumpyness. He even bit me yesterday which is not like him at all.

Ok today will be attempt one of delaying his am nap. Trouble is he's such a grump and so ready for it come 10am ish!

Will keep you all posted Confused xx

I think my DS was around 18 months when he dropped to one nap, like your son up til then he was sleeping well at night and had an am and pm nap. He kept resisting the PM so I did what you have done and pushed the morning one back and it's been great ever since.

Glad he has had a later nap for you today, you may find the first few days of this by bedtime he is a bit overtired (my son was a nightmare for a week Grin) but you'll soon settle into a new nap routine!

jaffas2013 · 12/09/2015 18:10

He's alot better today than this time yesterday. Who'd thought something so simple as moving his nap 1.5hrs would make all the difference Wink

Early days I know l and we haven't got to bedtime yet but so far I'm impressed!

That's good news OP, hope it's a turning point for you.

Great news. I'm impressed you still had a two nap routine. Ds2 is 20 months and been on 1 nap since he was 13 months.... He goes through States of resisting it, and can occasionally cope with no nap, but ne needs it. His brother is 4 and still naps, but is an early waking nightmare. Another story...
