Need help! my little girl can't seem to sleep after ive taken her dummies away

I've had to go cold turkey on the dummies after catching my little girl with the whole thing in her mouth with her mouth shut Confused shes 10 months old and currently teething. I'm now on night number 3 of no dummy and she normally sleeps right through after her last bottle but shes waking every 30mins to 1hour sobbing because she wants to sleep but can't seem to figure out how without her dummy. Shes really struggling with nap time as well for the same reason. I'm hoping someone has some words of wisdom to help as shes so desperately tired and so am I.
I feel like the worst mum in the world as I've put her through this but I couldnt risk the consequences onher choking or gagging with a whole dummy in her mouth Sad

Far from the worst mum in the world you are protecting her! How/where is she sleeping? It won't last. I had to wean my dd off co sleeping at 3 (my own fault post divorce crap). It's hellish for the few nights they're getting used to a new routine but in a few nights she won't even remember and it'll just be an anecdote for you to embarrass her with when shes a lanky teen like mine.

Can you think bigger? Is there a toy, safe for her age, that she could suck and chew a corner of, that would simply be far too big to fit into her mouth?

Could you try another type of dummy? There's so many out there and some have larger shields than others. My 3.5 year old still sleeps with his, it's a mam one with a large open shield that goes around it - they make them in 12 months plus size, available in tesco and amazon. I know lots of people are against dummies but I think if they're kept for only sleep time and it means everyone sleeps it's fine. I have an older child aged 12 and she slept with one till she was 4.5 and her teeth are fine too.

Shes never really attached herself to anything except her dummy.. shes always has a muslin for snuggling butnnot really fussed by it. She sleeps in her cot in her own room and has done happily for months. The dummy she had was 12-18 months and huge shes obviously just got a massive gob lol much to my husbands delight as he can make many "guess who she takes after" jokes. I just feel awful for her she just wakes continuously and sits there sobbing looking at me as if to say "fix it mummy" I just don't know how. Perhaps ive just got to stick this one out. I just hope it doesn't take too long

oh poor thing, that must have been a scare for you. You may have to ride it out alright, but if you find you crack in the middle of the night (as we all do), there is a good tip in Elizabeth Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution called the Pantley Pull-Off. It's a how-to to wean babies from sucking to sleep and involves letting the baby suck a nipple or dummy until almost asleep and then removing it - and repeat and repeat and repeat until they give up and go to sleep. Maybe that would help?

Naturesutten and goldi dummies have such a big shield there's no way she would be able to swallow it. It sounds like she's telling you she's not ready to give it up, I'd reintroduce imho.

helloelo · 03/09/2015 10:24

(Reintroduce a dummy with a bigger shield that is)

FATEdestiny · 03/09/2015 22:15

Give the baby a dummy, they are a huge comfort to babies.

Get a dummy with a bigger shield, as mentioned above.

Or get a dummy holder.

Poor baby. I'd reintroduce for a long time yet.

I wasnt really worried about her swallowing it more about her gagging and possibly being sick with the whole thing wedged in her mouth causing her to choke. I've been to asda boots and tesco and cant find anything with a bigger sheild than the ones she had already. I'm not sure what to do. Sad
