Dummy or thumb

Hi, i have a 3 month old bottle fed ds who has only had a dummy to help to sleep a few times when overtired. He has always like to suck on his thumb nuckle while going to sleep and it looks like he might suck the thumb when he decides to stop tucking it in his fist ????. So here is the question. Do i give him a dummy or see what happens when he finds his thumb?
thanks.

You can remove a dummy more easily when he gets older. It's hard to discourage thumb sucking from a lot of children! Having said that my Dd sucked her thumb from 12 until about 20 weeks and then promptly stopped of her own accord once she had learnt to sleep ...

Preferably neither.

However, having had to deal with stopping two children thumb sucking, would say go with a dummy as you can take it away.

DC1 had a dummy and gave it up at 6 months, DC2 had one and gave it up at 3.5 years (!). DC3 didn't have one as DC2 would take it off him. My ex SIL has awful shaped teeth and a hollow in the roof of her mouth due to thumb sucking, that was my worst fear. You can't take thumbs away.

DD (8) will need braces due to thumb, they are just waiting for here to be a bit older/have more adult teeth. Wish I had given her a dummy.

Yes, both DS1 and DD had braces at 7 due to thumbsucking. The braces were the only thing that stopped them from sucking.

Dummy!!! Dd (11) is still sucking her thumb and is starting braces soon. Ds had a dummy until he was around 3 and has perfect teeth.

As people have said Dummy. I had a thumb sucker and it ruined her teeth and she sucked her thumb till she was 14 ( only stopped because a brace blocked it) she is now 21 and still has the urge to suck her thumb.

Thanks everyone. I would rather not need a dummy but i think thats the way its heading.

Mine were both thumb suckers from birth neither would take a dummy. I'm so glad I didn't force it as dc1 stopped on his own around six months and seven month old dd only does it when very over tired and less and less often as she gets older.

Dummy. You can negotiate its removal later and there were girls at my school still sucking their thumbs at 16! We also have a family member with bucked teeth due to thumb sucking.

Had his second lot of injections today. 3 jabs and and some drops to drink so he is feeling a bit sorry for himself at the mo. Dummy is being used, bless him
