I've just put my ds in his own room and feeling bad. I have mixed views from family, dh side think I am cruel as ds is only 4 months and should be in the same room as us. Am I being cruel for putting ds in his own room??

The HV and books all recommend 6 months for own room from what I remember - all linked to the cot death advise.

Dd was actually in our room until we moved house when she was about 15/16 months. The first place we had it just wasn't practical - ground floor flat, her room would have been at opposite of flat and at trhe front of the house.

research on which the 6month advice is based was done in birmingham (not alabama!) - hence probably its prominence in UK not US. It was a study done on families which from a SIDS point of view did everything 'wrong' - i.e. smoked, hot rooms etc. But the babies had a very low SIDS rate and the one thing they had in common was that they never slept alone. HOWEVER, I was told that it was a very small study - some of these clinical studies which get huge publicity are done on 12 children FFS. Not necessarily this one tho, I haven't seen the study itself. From my point of view I was all set to follow this advice but lasted 2 days with ds in same room as he was a completely nocturnal baby and none of us would have got a wink. He seemed to behave no differently in his room and we always heard if he needed us (boy did we hear), so you go ahead and try moving him. Give it a week or two and if you both hate it you can always move him back - it's not irrevocable! Best wishes.
