Quilt, coverlet or duvet? Confused!

My giant 22 month old is already getting too big for his 18-36 month grobag, so I'm planning on making the change to a toddler duvet soon. I've got a couple of questions though - most toddler duvets seem to be around 4 tog, which would be really hot in a grobag, so are they suitable for this time of year? What do you use when The weather gets really hot / cold?
Also, I've seen some really nice quilts / coverlets. Are they just for cot decoration or do you use them instead of a duvet? Are they generally thicker or thinner than a duvet? Feeling a bit confused with all the options, lol! Confused
Finally, my ds isn't a huge wriggler but he does change position a couple of times during the night. So should I tuck the duvet in or leave it loose?

Grobag are lower togs than duvets because sleeping bags are enclosed so keep in the heat. Duvets don't.

Do you use a duvet yourself on your own bed? The same ratings apply to single or toddler duvets as with all duvets.

4.5 tog is usual summer weight duvet. You can get up to about 15 tog for winter (I think). Everyone has their own unique preference for tog rating.

If moving from sleeping bag to duvet, I would go straight to single duvet rather than toddler sized. You can put a single duvet across ways on a toddler bed so that it can be tucked in easily either side. This allows for easier transition since toddler will never have got used to the idea of covers falling off.

Some people use quilts/blankets/sheets instead of duvets. hey are more easily tucked in. I wouldn't use quilt and duvet unless it was very cold. Much depends on the temperature of your house.

Just a quick response, I was told by a bedding 'expert' that children under 10 years shouldn't have a higher tog rating than 10.5 as they can't properly regulate temperature until then, or get out if they are too hot. As in they might wake because too hot under duvet but not realise they ought to get out from under it. My now 14mo had a 4.5 tog duvet through the winter with a blanket if it got really cold. He still has it now but generally kicks it off so doesn't have anything! In the summer I plan on just giving him a cellular blanket as he is still in his cot.

Everyone in our house (except baby), DH & I and older children, use 4.5 tog duvets year round. That's mine and DH preference and we just never bought alternate winter weight duvets for the children so they got used to it (and instead wear fluffy onsies when cold)

This would depend on where you live though. If I lived in chilly Scotland through a terrible winter without heating, I think I might consider a much higher tog rating.

Thanks both, all very logical advice! It didn't occur to me that toddler duvets would use the same tog system as adult ones - that's my revelation for the day, lol.
I'm annoyed as I bought a toddler duvet set in the Aldi baby event yesterday, feeling all pleased with my bargain, except that now I've looked at the dimensions it seems 20cm different from all the standard toddler duvet cover sets Ive seen. Sigh. I can just tuck any extra in, right?
