My 3 1/2 mth old is constantly waving his hands around when he eneters his light sleep and they are so frantic he wakes himself up. Does anyone else suffer this problem and any suggestions to calm him down. The only things that work are things we don't want to do - take him intp bed with us and hold his hands, or give him a dummy!!!

Help!!

I have this problem and unfortunately do not have any answers. I used to sawddle, but she got her hands out of that. Have just given up after she woke herself up 20 mins into morning nap, got so sick of trying to resettle her, that I just walked out, and came down to type this. Have just about had enough of it. So I'd like some advice too.

We had the same problem and used one of these until ds grew out of it (not the leopardskin print one...). It's like a big sock that you stretch over them up to the neck - it is looser than proper swaddling and allows some movement but not a lot. Ds wasn't keen on being put in it, but loved it once he was cosy inside, and tended to zonk out immediately. Depends if your ds likes being swaddled...

Hi SusieR - have just posted a thread on the exact same subject as I have been wondering if it's now too late to start swaddling my 12 week dd when she has never been before. Trouble is she hates it!

Have done exactly the same as you and have held her arms until she is deeply asleep! Madness I know...

The only other thing I have not tried yet - and I know its complete anathema - is putting her to sleep on her tummy... Some friends of mine swear by it but obviously you have to do what you're comfortable with. I might give it a go and if it works try turning her back over when she's fast asleep.

I'm waiting for the day when this wretched Moro reflex passes!

Hi - Teddy has slept on his front since about four weeks old (he's now 14 weeks). We used to put him on his side, when he was swaddled, but he'd fight it - even his miracle blanket, escape and end up on his tummy. So we started to swaddle him with his arms out and let him sleep on his front. Two weeks later he started to sleep through. He just seems to be happier that way. We moved him into a grobag at 9 weeks, firstly during the day and then at night. We have an Angelcare monitor which will sound if it senses that he's stopped breathing or moving. He does throw himself about a but, and kind of claws at the mattress as he's going to sleep, but he doesn't whack himself in the face - he saves that trick for when he's on his playmat, straing boss-eyed at his hands, then, bop, straight in the mush!
