What age did you move your toddler from cot to bed?

And did it work out OK? Just trying to decide when we should move our little one into a bed. He is only 13mo so quite a while off yet but already the cot seems too small for him! He moves around a lot and always bangs his head or feet during the night.

17 months I think it was. She started to climb out and I was terrified she was going to hurt herself.

She was fine moving into a bed despite it being quite early.

DD had a cotbed so size wasn't a problem. I took the sides off the day I caught her standing on the top rail so she could turn the light on. She was around 2. We had a few nights of her falling asleep on the floor but it was generally ok. We had a stair gate across her door as it opened on to the stairs and it was the safest option.

20 months or so for ds and about 2.5 years old for dd. Looking back we moved ds too soon. Yes he seemed too big but actually not really!

my ds Is 3 in July and still in his cot he has just started climbing out. he normally just sits and waits for one of us to get him out.

Somewhere between 15 and 18 months, both DC when they were able to climb out and we decided bed near floor level was safer

Minikievs · 09/05/2015 21:56

My DS was almost 3. He never tried to climb out and slept 12 hours in his cot. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

steppemum · 09/05/2015 21:57

2 for ds and dd1, partly they were tall and partly new sibling was on the way so they needed to move.

In hindsight, I would leave them as long as possible, as it was bad news for naps and bedtime.

Getting a big duvet and wrapping it round the mattress sideways would have made the cot last longer.

dd2 climbed out of her cot at 18 months we didn't have room for a bed, so we took the side off her cot and put a trunk next to the bed so she could climb down.

DinkyDye · 09/05/2015 22:01

3 for dd as she wasn't a climber and would call out to us to get her.

13 months, a bit annoying for 2 days. Worked out fine after that.
I got quite a low single bed and he has a bed gaurd as he is very rolly.

PickleSarnie · 09/05/2015 22:14

My DS is 2.9. Still in a cot. Not even a cot bed. Never tried to climb out. Sleeps brilliantly. Bars are the way forward.

FATEdestiny · 09/05/2015 22:30

I think my DC1 and DC2 were around 3 years old. DC3 was older (4 I think) but that was for practicalities reasons - he was happy in his cot and we were planning a bedroom swap with his siblings so we waited to get a proper bed for when the room swap happened.

If your LO is happy in the cot, don't rush to change things.

Remember that you can actually teach your child not to climb the cot sides. It is possible (and indeed responsible).

Bert2e · 09/05/2015 22:33

2 years - we needed the cot for his imminent baby brother!

Missm00 · 09/05/2015 22:36

My dd was 14months, when I moved her into a bed. And she couldn't actually walk yet at the time. I moved her as she was thrashing about so much in it when she tantrumed at bedtime, that the cot was starting to fall apart. I also needed it for her (then) newborn brother. A yr on and she is perfect in it and sleeps much better than before

RatOnnaStick · 09/05/2015 22:37

Ds1 was 2.6, he never tried to climb out. The onky reason we did it then was to get him used to sleepi g in a bed before we went away.

Ds2 is 2.5 and we're close to it. The only thing stopping us is he would not settle down to sleep right now as hes trying to drop the daytime nap and hea frequently awake batting around his cotbed til 9pm Hmm

Shootingstar2289 · 11/05/2015 21:07

My son was 13 months and he started to hate his cot. He would wake up crying wanting to get put. Bought him a toddler bed and a bed guard - best thing ever! He loved it and slept so much better - didn't even try and get out.

It's like he liked the idea of a bed and not feeling enclosed :)

Fairylea · 11/05/2015 21:09

Ds is 3 in June and still in his cot bed. He never tries to climb out and just waits for us to come and get him or shouts at us over the baby monitor (!) He sleeps well in it so I'm in no rush to move him out of it!

Blazing88 · 11/05/2015 21:11

22 months. Best thing we ever did was not putting a bed guard, but putting an old cotbed mattress on the floor (tucks under the cot bed in the day) and a rolled up towel under the fitted sheet. She fell out twice before we did the towel thing and has never fallen out since. (towel idea was off here!)

Bed guards are a proven hazard. I don't understand people's obsession with using them! Much more dangerous than simply falling off the mattress! Plus they are so fugly!
