My 13 week old ds has recently stopped zonking out after his bath and feed at 7 and have started to try and put him down awake (as all the "experts" seem to suggest) problem is i have to give him a dummy till he falls asleep - sometimes have to stroke his head as well, sometimes he cries a bit along with it.
my question is, is it worth spending money on those light up things with lullaby tunes to send him to sleep?
I'm worried he might be too stimulated by them and think it's play time, as up until now, I've kept noise and lights for daytime, and keep it dark at night time
silly question i know .....

Hi I have never given my son anything stimulating in his cot - I think it distracts him - how would you like it if you were trying to sleep and someone comes along and puts a musical mobile over your head? Save your money and get him into a good routine of bath and bed time. You may need to stay with him until he goes to sleep at first but gradually try to reduce this until you can put him down and leave the room. I also find the sleeping bags helpfull because they cant roll around and feel secure

Thank you - that was my gut instinct as well - I keep it low key and quiet after bath and during the night, so I think it would confuse him if there was suddenly a new toy to play with. I just get seduced by all the pretty light up things that promise to "soothe and lull your baby to sleep" with a picture of an angelic baby sleeping peacefully on the box.

I suppose if there were such a gadget, there wouldnt be so many of us sleep deprived mums!!

I have a 4 week old DS, got him a frog that plays a lullaby, and he HATES it! So funny as I had visions of him loving it.. well, maybe he's just too young.

I just sing a particular song which I used to sing all the time when I was pregnant, and that seems to soothe him, so I guess any lullaby sung by mummy probably beats any gadgets out there... but my top ones are head stroking as well, and also swaddling.. can't beat swaddling! However things might change by the time mine is 13 weeks.. best of luck!

I can reccomend a lullaby thing by Tomy - we used it from birth for both our sons as part of their wind down routine. It plays soft lullabies and puts out little pictures on the ceiling. They really love it and it must be a bit Pavlovian because if they cry out in the night it comes on and always seems to soothe them. I guess it's just what they get used to!
