given that ds woke again today at 5:45 (after an 8pm bedtime) and is 2.5 hours into a daytime nap

dd1 - no (if she had less than 2.5hrs she was a major pita)

dd2 - yes

clear as mud now aren't you??

Gobbledispook · 07/11/2006 13:48

no clear answer!

When ds1 was little, friends would say if their babies slept in the day they'd never go down at night. Mine used to sleep for a good few hours in the day and still sleep through the night for 12 hours.

They are all different!

No

if i try to curtail babylulu's daytime sleep she is a miserable baby who ends up falling asleep at 5 pm which is a surefire way for her to be up at 5.00 am!!!

so i let her sleep as long as she need in the day! which can be a 2.5 hour marathon! usually 12 - 2. or 2.30!

same with my DS

IME, DS1 could sleep for 2.5 hours in the day up until he was at least 2 1/4 and it not affect night sleep. TBH, I'd rather he slept a bit in the day and went to bed an hour later rather than be really cross and grumpy late afternoon. He still tends to sleep better and longer at night when he's not over tired.

What's he like if you woke him up after say 1 1/2 hours??

ComeOVeneer · 07/11/2006 13:50

What age is he? My ds (will be 2 next month) has between 2 to 3 hour nap every afternoon and sleeps 7pm to 7am. DD at that age on the other hand had no day time nap (dropped it at 18 months) and slept 7.30pm to 6.30pm. Having said that ds did wake at 5.45am this morning so if he does it again tomorrow Iwill consider shortening his nap.

dd1 used to do 12 till 3 (absolute bliss let me tell you, those 3 hours)

dd2 has about an hour if that and nothing if we are out and about and she is too busy being nosy.

Tinkerboo · 07/11/2006 14:00

No. both mine had structured daytime naps aka SWMNBM. and I think this helped them sleep well at night.
maybe not TOO much tho2-21/2hrs max.

harpsichordcarrier · 07/11/2006 14:02

depends on the child, but generally Ithink good daytime sleep = good night time sleep as long as it is not too late in the day

firststeps · 07/11/2006 14:42

not if 3 hours or less and not too close to tea time. my lo generally does 11.30/12 - 2/2.30 and usually sleeps 12 hours at night unless teething etc......

BettySpaghetti · 07/11/2006 14:46

No

BikeBug · 07/11/2006 16:35

No! ds got chronically overtired without enough daytime sleep and was an utter nightmare at night (for about, oh, 7 months before I cottoned on). More daytime sleep has helped our nights.
