How would you go about 2 - 1 nap in my position?

DS2 is 12.5mo and currently naps 10am until 11.30 and then 3.20 until 4pm. It is getting increasing difficult to get him to sleep for his afternoon nap and I'm sick of fighting him over it so think it's time to go down to one. Bedtime is at 7.30, he is usually asleep by 8pm (late due to late PM nap). Gets up between 6 - 6.30am, wakes in the night sometimes only once, sometimes up to three times. The reason his PM nap is so late is due to picking up DS1 from school at 3pm - he won't sleep in the car so has to wait until we get home and can go into his cot. I'm worried about having an overtired baby on my hands but current routine not sustainable really. Would would be the best way to go about it?

Today he wouldn't go to sleep for PM nap until 3.45pm, too late! Will have to wake him up after only 20 mins otherwise bedtime will be very late!

Can you try and push back morning nap so you morph the two you currently have into one after (early) lunch?

Twinklestar2 · 28/04/2015 16:06

Can you push the morning one later and later till it becomes one long lunchtime nap?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 28/04/2015 16:08

Definetly push the morning nap back. Try for an early lunch at 11, down by half eleven. As he adjusts to that, push it back once a week by 15mins.

If needs, put him to bed at 6/6.30 in those early weeks.

Yes, I was thinking about pushing morning nap back but wasn't sure how quickly I should do it? He is tired and yawning by 9.30!

There's always this phase of Mummy frantically singing with, talking to, generally trying to keep baby awake in the morning when first transitioning to one nap.

Start with doing your research. See if you can find something to do (baby group, parent and toddler group, singing group etc) every morning. Or invent things to do - swimming, park, etc. Anything so he is out of the pushchair/carseat and doing active things in the morning. Keep him going as long as possible.

There will be a transition time when you have to work hard keeping him up in the morning. Usually nap time settles around 11am for a while (so early lunch is required) and then can be slowly pushed forward until it settles around 12.30pm-2.00pm ish.
