If you have a bednest, please read this (concerning unsafe usage)

There has been an extremely sad case where a little girl has died after being left alone in a bednest co-sleeper cot.

The story is here.

The bednest is not inherently dangerous, the problem occurs when the setting with the very low barrier between a parent's bed and the cot is used and the baby is placed on the front to sleep.

It's really upset me as I would imagine this would be the option chosen by parents who want the benefits of co sleeping but didn't want to risk the baby rolling into the adult bed. Please, if you're doing this, stop and use either the "safe bridge" set up or put both sides up entirely. It does also seem as though the problem was caused in part by the baby being on their front, but in any case a baby can roll without warning - safer not to use it at all.

The poor family :(

so sad, this could happen even if baby has been placed on it's back. My dd started rolling over already at 9 weeks. I would never risk using anything that can harm my baby.... just sayin'

That's not true Butterfly.

Even when the cot side is folded in half its still pretty high. It was the combination of folded side plus high degree of tilt (plus tummy sleeping baby) which combined to cause this death. A rolling baby would only find themselves squashed up against the side of the cot.

I bought one recently, second hand, and ended up downloading the instructions earlier as they were not provided. I do think the instructions make it quite clear how it should be used and I don't think the nest is inherently dangerous. However unfortunately even if provided you can't make parents read them so a difficult situation for nct and bednest.
I recall a situation a couple of years ago when anglecare monitors were recalled (only in the US) because children had got suffocated by the wires yet if used correctly this shouldn't be an issue.

I really feel for the parents in each case. Sadly though tragedies like this will happen from time to time, it's sadly up to us as mothers to make the right choices to keep our babies as safe as possible. I strongly believe my baby will be safer in the bednest than he would be in my bed.

Thanks for the responses to my worries, I unfortunately can't use another co sleeper type crib because we have a sleigh bed and I came to the conclusion the Bednest was the only suitable one.

That like was very helpful, thanks, and I've had a proper read through the instructions which is helpful because we don't have the Bednest yet.

It's a really good point about the angelcare monitor I remember when they were recalled and we were using one for my dd. Perhaps because I had been using it for a while I felt confident that if used correctly there was no danger.
