Safe bed rail to co-sleep

Can anyone recomend a good bed rail (or home made alternative) for co-sleeping with a newborn?

My bed room is too small for it to go against the wall. I can't help but think that the 'Tomy' style ones with nylon mesh are designed for toddlers rather than newborns, and would be a bit of a hazard with regards to head trapped between nyoln mesh and mattress (and also be too short). Anyone got any other ideas? At the moment, I'm thinking of a DIY solution of making a fixed rail out of two pieces of hardboard screwed together (suspect that's crazy talk though!).

we have a tomy one...I would think it would be ok...could you not put a cushion down the gap? I can't think of anything else..sorry
Happy sleeping though

I use a Babydan rail - similar to the Tomy but works for beds with a slatted base as well as divans. I know it says 18 months, but I use it with my 8 month old (and have from 6 months). He has tried to find a gap between the rail and mattress, but the most he can do it stick an arm or leg down there - frustrating for him, but not dangerous. There really isn't much of a gap.

Thanks. Perhaps I was overthinking this one!

I'll get the Tomy and see how we go.

I actually have a regular cot from Dd1 - trying to avoid spending more than I need to!
