Mattress advice please

We're moving DD 2.2 into her 'big girl bed' in a couple of weeks to make way for new baby due in June. I am utterly utterly confused as to what mattress we should get for her single slatted base bed frame! She's not potty trained so will have to cope with future accidents. She's 14.5kg so fairly heavy for her age (81st centile). Me and DH have a history of allergies between us so think anti allergy would be of benefit. She sleeps mainly on her front so also have the joy of finding a very flat/soft pillow! What a minefield. Can anyone guide me please?

You're overthinking! Get a full-sized mattress (so her weight or your weight together won't be an issue. Look for something anti-allergy, or if it's not that strong an allergy use mattress covers straight away instead. I only have one toilet-trained child but he never wet the bed at night. Until we were sure, we used mattress pads things you can buy placed under the sheets.

Also, a toddler pillow will be smaller than a normal one so may be more suitable

Definitely over thinking things.

Just get a single mattress from any bed store, anti-allergy if you like. Get a mattress protector. Have some bed mats ready (available in supermarkets). Go to John Lewis or similar for pillows - massive selection.

Ha thank you! You can see how confused I was getting! I do have to take into account the slats though as not all mattresses and not all thicknesses will be compatible.

Not especially no, mostly any decent mattress will be fine on any kind of bed base.

I have no doubt that eager salesmen might try to flog you the most expensive option on the basis of anything they can think of (like slats, if you mention it). But I have never heard that certain single mattresses can only be used on certain kinds of beds.

From experience with my first child, I would personally advise that it's worth sending a little bit extra on a reasonably deep, comfortable mattress that will last a reasonable length of time, especially if you may need to lie with your DD at any stage. Some mattresses are no-turn (can only go one side up), and some can be flipped either way. Using a good quality waterproof mattress protector from the start will help keep the mattress clean and dry, and you could always put a disposable bed mat under that too if bed wetting was an issue.
