9 month old waking up every hour?

Just that - why is my 9 mo suddenly waking up every hour...and then being wide awake between 3 and 5 am so impossible to settle ? This has just happened in the last few nights. He was never a great sleeper but was at best going from 7.30 -7 am. ..maybe with one wake at 9.30pm. Now this is back how he was at 5 mo.
He will settle with a cuddle but has that irritating cot detector and keeps waking in hysterics when put back in the cot .
Help!
(We bought a ewan the sheep but doesn't seem to be helping much)

What cot detector? A SIDS one? Surely he's too old for that now?

Theres a big sleep regression at 9 months where sleep goes right out the window - basically their brains are in over drive as they are making a developmental leap (my two learnt to stand at that age) so can't sleep. Plus I remember ds had his canines coming through and he was a bad teether.

Other obvious stuff - have you ruled out allergies and food intolerance or reflux as this can mess with sleep.

Thanks Iggly - interesting info..much appreciated.

The cot detector is his inbuilt one - no matter how fast asleep he is, even the lean in to the cot and certainly the placing in the cot leads to eyes wide open, arms flailing wildly and shreaking !! Ha ha :-D

An inbuilt cot detector must be irritating. Is it in the mattress? Can you remove it? I would change the mattress for a normal one, since he's likely to be in the cot for the next 2 years at least.

Could the cause of the wake ups be teething? Have you tried calpol and teething gel?

She means his cot detector is built into him! Lol. I second the teething, mine used to wake every hour when teething. I find ibuprofen works better and for longer than calpol.

Aso anbusol liquid is quite good and doesn't drop off your finger or the gum before you get chance to rub it in.

Thanks all! Yes - it's the baby who has the cot detector - ha ha!! He has never yet fallen asleep of his own accord in there . He hates it. (I do encourage him to play in it in the day but usually he cries and tries to escape as soon as I leave the room).
Anyhow...He did much better last night...from 8.30pm through to 5.30 am self settling After a day with only two half hour naps - he was obviously tired enough to then sleep at night ! (Anyone else find this "rule" of sleeping longer in the day means better sleep at night a load of rubbish? )
Also read an interesting article yesterday about why babies are not meant to sleep through the night or sleep separately from us. As I often think - it's a totally un natural way of us trying to get baby to fit in with a modern lifestyle (evolution will take a while to catch up) - so I guess for most of us, we're on to a loser!
