Cats and sleeping babies

Due our second sproglet in September, first time round we didn't have cats but now we have two... They are lovely but are most definitely heat seeking snuggling devices - just wondering how we prevent them from sleeping on our sleeping baby?

Be very, very firm when cats go near Moses basket or cot. We did this when we bought DC1 home from hospital. Our cats were young and learned never to go near, even with subsequent babies.

I was worried about this and had looked at getting a cat net to fit over the Moses baskets but we didn't need it in the end. The cat was totally uninterested in the babies and pretty much lived outside for the first six months of their lives. She did like to sleep in the car seats though. Maybe it would help to have the Moses basket on a stand and you could look at getting a cat net if you're still worried?

I have 3 cats who did not need any training - they were terrified of newborn DS. Mind, they would happily try to sneak into his car seat and pram when he was not there, but never with him. So might not even be a problem.

Thanks everyone! I'll have to see how interested they are. Can't imagine not being careful about this anyway so I'm sure my over vigilance will serve me well...!

Baby = loud, flailing, sometimes smelly foreign object. cats = scared of loud, flailing, unpredictable smelly foreign objects. Plus the baby will never feed it so I expect, as ours did, yours will stay well away!
Just make sure to cover the crib when the baby is out of it... that was our only training that needed doing.

Haha dreaming very true. Our cats generally have little peoplethat vvisit! Good idea about covering the bed in baby's absence. We'll be Co sleeping and the cats usually sleep on the bed in the day time. Is that a bad idea?

I didn't worry about them sleeping on our bed but drew the line at them getting in her bednest that was attached to the bed, so used to put a pillow in there in between her sleeps. I just didn't want too much fur accumulating in there...

With DC1 we got the moses basket out a good month before the baby was born, and put dabs of tee tree oil on it (cats avoid this scent). They never went near it. Once it had a noisy, fussy baby inside it they were even more keen to avoid it!

Dc2, well, he is currently sleeping in his crib in our bedroom and our two cats plus next doors cat are all asleep on our bed (crib onother side of the room). I have no concerns, and am sure your cats will be equally keen to avoid the baby.
