How to move a sleeping baby?

My DS is one week old and only goes to sleep on me. But when I move him to his Moses basket or to the arms of DH he stirs and wakes. Meaning we have to go through the whole routine of getting him off to sleep again. I wonder if I'm moving him to soon after he falls asleep? How many minutes should I wait before moving him from me to his basket?

Try swaddling. Heat the moses basket with a hot water bottle before you put him in it.

Try to wrap/ swaddle him in a Muslim/ blanket before laying him on you to sleep. Then once he is asleep it's easier to transfer as he will still be wrapped and won't feel the temperature change so much

We found with ds1 that the miracle blanket helped with this! Nice and tightly swaddled made it easier to do the Indiana Jones style pressure plate challenge! Also making sure the new location is nice and warm!

Good luck. Inevitably babies want to be close to you so will naturally wake when you move them. I would leave baby a good while before moving. You may not be able to prise them off you for a good while yet though. Don't worry doesn't last for ever. My DS is 4. I remember fondly the days when he would only sleep on me. Cherish this time even though it is hard work.

I'd use a muslin, not too many Muslims around when you need one Grin

Awww, .

I found the swaddle pod was really good for my dd, though she wasn't big enough for it until about 1 month old. She just loved to be snuggled.
Do make the most of it, even at 9 months old I only get snuggles when she's ill or tired. She humours me for a minute then wiggles away!!

Thank you!! Great suggestions Grin
Do you swaddle before feeding or after? DS tends to pass out at the end of the feed and swaddling him then wakes him...

Swaddle him before his feed then. That way you won't wake him up if he dozes off during his feed. And congratulations. Flowers

Awww! Nostalgic now - I remember this stage so well. As well as swaddling and warming the surface, I found that putting DS down on a slightly uneven surface made a massive difference. Obviously there can't be anything that could be a suffocation risk, but a slightly rumpled blanket under his body seemed to feel more like being held/lying on me, whereas putting him down on a nice smooth mattress was scary. He also loved having the Dyson running next to his Moses basket and would go straight to sleep as soon as it went on! The noise, warmth and vibration must have reminded him of the womb.

are you trying to do the switch whilst they are still twitchy/clenched/darting closed eyes? About 15/20mins after mine drop off, they stop that and do proper deep sleep/limp baby and can move them anywhere as long as there not a huge temperature change Smile

It worked!!! Grin (So far, so good anyway..)
DS is fast asleep in his Moses basket, swaddled, after leaving him for 20mins before moving. Thank you all!!

we used to lift his arm and if it flopped we'd say 'he's sparko' in a Scouse accent... I have no idea why, newborns send you a bit mentile

Needsweetstosurvive · 03/04/2015 09:32

I used to wait 15 - 20 minutes and checked for floppy arm just to be sure. I miss mine being tiny Sad

I'm due in 4 weeks and really appreciate this thread as a check to myself when I'm going through it again and feel at the end of my tether!
