Early wakings

My ds is currently waking at 5.30 and with a newborn dd who wKes up for feeds still we are exhausted. He also wakes in the night sometimes several times but will just cry for 30 seconds or talk/shout and then go back to sleep. I know we are very lucky he will self settle but we are awake and it can take ages to get back to sleep.

I am trying to see if daytime activities are affecting it but so far can see no pattern. He does it on days when we have been busy and he's had no nap and days where he's had a short nap say from 1.30-2 or he might fall asleep in the car from 3-3.30 (which I know is too late) but so far no difference.

I guess people would suggest later bedtime. He starts bedtime routine at 6.30/6.45 depending on if he is having a bath or not and is in bed by 7. He currently goes to sleep pretty quickly which makes me think this is the right time for him to go to bed. Yesterday he had no nap and was tired and cranky by 6 so feel we a couldn't make bedtime any later.

He is meant to sleep officially from 1-3 but used to sleep until 3.30. However I could always get away with him either having the nap or not depending on our activities that day. which previously didn't effect his bedtime or his morning wakings but does now .

Personally, and I know I'll get flamed for this, I think that's too young to skip or drop naps. Having said that, his sleep cycle will be 45 mins, so I think 1.5 hours is plenty. Could you try putting him down at 12 and waking him at 1.30 pm?

Is he eating enough too? Often early waking can be associated with hunger. Can you give us a rough idea of what he eats and drinks in a day?
