Do I need a monitor for a one-bed flat?

Just that really - PFB due to arrive in 10 weeks or so, am getting myself organised with everything we'll need - but realised I hadn't even thought much about baby monitors.

In our flat there's just our bedroom (where little one will have his bednest for night time sleeping), the living room, the kitchen (which we can move the moses basket between for naps, I'm guessing?) and then the bathroom.
It's all on one floor - rooms are big and tall ceiling-ed, with not much in the way of corridor between them, so sound travels well.

Following the advice for SIDS, we're aiming (perhaps we're mad?!) for one of us to always be in the room he's sleeping in anyhow.

But even so, am I being hideously neglectful for not having a monitor on my list? If so, which one should I get? (think I'm getting decision fatigue with all the options of prams, pumps, cots etc etc available, can't face another choice!)

We didn't gave one for our first child, we were in a 2 bed semi at the time. Got one for the 2nd though as now in a 3 bed detached and having another older child tends to drown out sounds from the baby! Don't use it during the night, just for naps and evening before we go to bed. I would say you won't need one, if baby needs you you will hear him

We're in a two bed flat (well, DS1's room is more of a box room than a 'proper' bedroom). We got a video monitor which we did find useful when DS1 was in our bedroom as we would put him down around 7pm from about 5 wks old and just keep an eye on him on the monitor while we had an evening to ourself in the living room. Same for daytime naps.

We moved him to his own room at 5 mths and after a couple of nights, I just switched it off as I could hear him perfectly well and it just meant I was hearing everything in stereo!! The only time I use it now is when he is having his first morning nap and I'm lazing in bed. I don't have the sound on but I can watch him and tell when he's starting to stir so I need to get up.

But if you're planning to always be in the same room as him until he's 6 mths then no, you won't need it but my advice is try and get him sleeping in another room from a reasonably young age and just check on him. For your own sanity!!
