When will baby sleep longer at night?

My nearly 6 wk old breastfeeds every 2 hrs day and night. He does sometimes sleep for 3 during night but this is sporadic!
Will it just happen one night that he'll sleep a bit longer?

I really feel for you FishFace my DS was like this and he was like it until he was 1 then went three hours until randomly at 14m just slept completely through one night and has done ever since practically but hopefully yours will be a lot better 6 weeks is still really young ThanksBrew

I'm afraid there's no way of telling;(
I know that my DD has found some of the gentle parenting websites useful in helping her to look at the sleep deprivation in a more positive way. Can't seem to link but Pinky McKay is one.

Honestly?

It will happen at some point. It may be a few weeks, it may be a few months, it could be years.

It's best not to fixate on how long it will last and roll with it.

What penguin said.
DC1 and 2 only slept through once I was about 6 months pregnant with the next baby. I'd imagine by that logic dc3 will never sleep because I'm never having more babies.

Definite - I feel like that about weaning from breastfeeding. How the hell do I actually wean one?!

westcountrywoman · 23/03/2015 20:02

Both my children woke every 2 hours at 6 weeks (both EBF too).

By 14 weeks DD was sleeping 10-12 hours through the night. It was a quick transition; she pretty much dropped a load of feeds overnight in one go.

DS was 2.5 YEARS before he did the same (and if he'd been the first-born, he'd have been an only child!).

Heatherbell1978 · 23/03/2015 20:36

Really hard to say. DS1 started sleeping 7 to 7 with feeds at 12 and 5 when he was 6 wks (ie two 5 hr stretches) then at 4 months he started waking every hour after 1am. This lasted until 3 weeks ago when he turned 6 months . Now he pretty much sleeps through. But no baby is the same.

DefiniteMaybe · 23/03/2015 23:07

penguin I had to wean dd using mail biting stuff on my boobs, she was 2 and a bit and was waking hourly for feeds. She weaned straight away, I managed to get pregnant within about a week of her weaning!

treewithtriplets · 23/03/2015 23:15

I'm wondering the same thing op, so it's good to hear from others that it will happen eventually! I've got prem (33wks) triplets, 5wks old, and as I'm trying to demand feed the first who wakes and then wake the other two to feed, I can't quite get my head round how sleeping longer than the current 3ish hrs could just happen!

So no wisdom from me cos I know balls-all about parenting yet, but lots of empathy for what that's worth!

Twinklestar2 · 27/03/2015 21:49

Mine slept through without feeds (would need to be settled but could do that by holding hand/ patting, etc) when I put him on mostly formula at 5 months.

CPtart · 27/03/2015 22:02

DS1 bf 2 hourly day and night for almost 3 months. I couldn't cope with it and was due back at work at 4 months. Switched to formula out of desperation and by 13/14 weeks he was sleeping 8-6. Not saying ff was the cause, but this is what happened. Never ever ever co-slept, own cot and darkened room and introduced a stodgy supper at weaning, and luckily had a consistent 10-12 hour sleeper thereafter.

6 weeks is still teeny tiny! They need to feed very frequently initially.
I have three DC who have all been breastfed and treated exactly the same as far as parenting/bedtime routines and what have you go.
DC 1 - started sleeping longer stretches at 8 weeks (5-7 hours), completely STTN (7pm-7am) at 3 months.
DC 2 - terrible sleeper, finally started STTN at 3 1/4 years!! (Although he's still prone to waking in the night every now and again)
DC 3 - just started STTN at 13 months (he's 14 months now), I still can't believe my luck! Had prepared myself for another couple of gruesome years as I thought he was more like DC2.

So, a lot of it depends on the child I'd say - when I only had DC1, I used to think people with babies who don't STTN must be doing something wrong - well obviously that came back to bite me in the arse with DC2!! As I said, didn't do anything differently with any of them, yet very different ages of starting to STTN.

Thanks for all the responses!
He must have known as in the last week he's only been waking up once in the night! Happy days Grin
