A quick question about cot bumpers

ThatCuckingFat · 06/03/2015 20:15

When we had DS we never bought a cot bumper as we were told not to bother with them due to safety guidelines and the general consensus from professionals seems to be a resounding nay.

However..
DS is now 5mo and has begun rolling in his sleep which is fine - the bars of the cot aren't really an issue, but he has now taken to wriggling right up to the top of the cot and banging his head on the headboard. He kicks the mattress repeatedly so his head hits the wood over and over again. I get up and put him back to the bottom and within 5 minutes he is at the top again.
It's making me slightly nervous as you can imagine. I was wondering if it would be ok to use a cot bumper just along the headboard to cushion the blow, as opposed to the whole U shape ones you can get? Would this still be dangerous?
He sleeps in a gro bag which doesn't stop the wriggling and I don't swaddle him because he doesn't like it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I don't know what to do for the best!

Get an airwrap instead... I'll find a link...

You can get them from all over though, not ist JL.

We have the air wrap and it's great for stopping hands and legs getting stuck etc but if you're looking an actual cushion bumper to stop him hurting his head then it would work as it's just thin material.

HaveYouHeardOfGoogle · 06/03/2015 20:21

*Wouldn't work, wouldn't!

ThatCuckingFat · 06/03/2015 20:29

Thanks Mrs they look good, I have heard they're a safe alternative but I thought the same as Google, they're like a mesh material so I'm not sure they would make a huge difference? I'm worried as he bangs his head right where his soft spot is, I thought about putting one of our pillows above him but am worried he would just pull it over his face

I personally wouldn't use a cot bumper, we have found the air wrap cushions enough. Could you try tucking the end of the grobag under the mattress if long enough?

ThatCuckingFat · 06/03/2015 21:01

That's a good idea, the one he's in at the moment isn't long enough but he is due to move into a bigger one soon so I'll give that a go. I tried him with a blanket tucked in tightly under the mattress tonight but that didn't last long, he's currently in the middle of the cot, but not at the top yet...

Having said that my two don't sound like they bang their heads repeatedly so I didn't need to make that choice!

BetweenDogandWolf · 06/03/2015 21:05

I heard something recently about a 9 month old baby who got a cot bumper wrapped around his neck and sadly died. I wouldn't risk using one.

CakeEqualsCurves · 06/03/2015 21:06

I've got an air wrap and would recommend. They also do thicker ones for that reason. I'll try to find...

CakeEqualsCurves · 06/03/2015 21:13

But you would need the 4 sided one to get the padding on the headboard part of the cot I guess.

pocketsized · 06/03/2015 21:23

Could you roll a small towel into a sausage shape and put it under the sheet so he couldn't wriggle right to the top? Maybe check with the Hv first...

Littlef00t · 09/03/2015 13:32

To be honest, if he's banging his head but not crying or stopping himself doing it, I wouldn't worry. He'd stop if it hurt, if it doesn't hurt its not likely to be doing himself an injury.

Lagoonablue · 09/03/2015 13:33

I used airwrap for the same reason. It works.

These might work

ThatCuckingFat · 09/03/2015 13:59

Thanks everyone. He doesn't do it constantly all night, but has woken himself up crying several times by doing it, hence why I'm slightly worried. He's a pretty good sleeper otherwise and will sleep through. I don't know why he does it, he's just a wriggly baby and always has been!
Last couple of nights I rolled a blanket up and wedged it inbetween the mattress and the cot, so he can't get right up to the wood and that has helped a bit.
lagoonablue I think those things are great but unfortunately the headboard part of the cot is one piece of wood, only the sides have bars so they wouldn't work for us either.
I'm hoping he will just grow out of it eventually once he realises it hurts!
