BUMPERS OR NOT (HELP)

Hello,

I hope you are all doing great.

My DD is almost 7 months old and ever since she was born she has been using a crib insert called sleepyhead, probably some of you might be using or heard of it. Anyway, I want to stop using it but the first time I put her in the crib without it she started pushing herself up with her legs and ended up at the top of the crib in less than a minute. Because of this we are still using the sleepyhead, I am afraid she might hit herself in the head with the crib bars at the top. I am thinking about buying bumpers but I have read everywhere that it is not good to use them for safety reasons.

how many of you use bumpers?? Any suggestions about what should I do??

I truly appreciate the help. Thank you,

Alexandra

I never used bumpers. They are not recommended for under 12 months for suffocation worries and not recommended for babies that can pull themselves up as they can then aid them to cot climb. Afaik they are useless at best, dangerous when young.

No bumpers. Absolutely not safe. You can get breathable cot liners. More for sticking arms out rather than hitting her head, they won't really stop that.

oh dear, thanks for replying...

Do you think she will hit her head? I am thinking to sort of train her to understand her new space without the sleepyhead during the day while I'm watching her and go from there....not sure what to do really...

I used Air wrap breathable bumpers. They are lightly padded mesh things that Velcro on with no ties. Saves arms hanging out of cot and wee bumps.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 06/03/2015 03:22

Even if she does hit it, the worst thing to happen is she'll wake herself up, I reckon. I've not heard of a baby seriously injure themselves in their sleep. It'd take some serious effort on their part!

Try her in her day time naps where you can watch her if you feel happier. DD was another who flailed around in her sleep and she was always just fineSmile

Oh well, I used bumpers for both mine, 11 month old still has one as he loves to sleep at the top of his cot and often bangs his head. I've heard they aren't safe, but then again, both mine had a pillow and duvet from 4 months old so I probably am not the right one to listen to! (All done due to advice from my Mum who has had 7 children).

There is one called airwrap that is safe from john Lewis. I used them as my son would throw himself about in his sleep & sit up then flop down dramatically etc

Cariad007 · 06/03/2015 07:56

I would've given bumpers a miss altogether but DS had chunky little thighs and kept getting them caught between the bars so I went for Air Wraps. They have Velcro so no risk of strangulation. There are breathable bumpers available on Amazon too but they aren't quite as safe as they have ties rather than Velcro.

alexandrapm · 06/03/2015 12:55

Thank you for all the replies, what a wonderful site!

I know about the air wrap but unfortunately is to big for our crib, we got the bloom alma mini crib that can last up until one year, she still has a lot of space there. From what I understand the air wrap size is for cots :( I checked and the apparently it is too big

I used Air Wrap when I had a mini cot - it's velcro so it wraps round any size cot.

alexandrapm · 06/03/2015 14:08

I've got airwrap branded but I can't see it being better than any of the other breathable cot wrap brands.

doobeedee · 06/03/2015 21:50

TK Max had another brand in for £9.99 the other day. They had different colours too.

Thank you all! I will keep you posted, hope you have a great weekend!
