Why do I NEVER feel refreshed in the morning?

Hi,
I must have had the longest sleep in 7 months, but, I still had to practically crawl out of bed I was so drained and tired. My DH says he feels refreshed when he wakes up, but I never do. Usually I feel worse and it takes a few hours to lift (if at all). What am I doing wrong? Im not sure if im sleeping too long (last night went to bed at 10.30, got up at 8.30), but sometimes DS wants to feed for 45 mins + at a time, 3/4 times a night. Am I going to sleep to late? Too long? Not enough water? Vitamins? I rarely have caffine, but this morning ive reached my limit and have downed a Red Bull to make me feel vaguely human. Please help me!

Thanks for reading

Unbroken sleep isn't restful
Ten hours seems too long too.
Do you exercise?
Lay off the booze?

When i was b/feeding,never really felt alive in morning though.

I have no answers but I feel the same. I can get up at 5.00 or 9.00 and still feel just the same. How old are you?

QuootieSpookypie · 26/10/2006 09:25

I feel to tired to exercise... im scared DS will have a "bad night" that night, and ill be buggered! That would probably help...

Rarely drink

Is it still 10 hours if ive been up for about 2 or 3 of them?

im the same.... went to bed at 10pm last night, woke at 11.30pm for the toilet, back to bed, out cold til 4.40am when jess woke for a drink, back to sleep until 7.15am. Still had to DRAG myself out of bed, and feel really tired still.

i know for certain that my iron levels are low, and my period arrived yesterday, so will feel like this for a few days (happens every month) but its also this time of the month i try and get both girls to have a nap together after lunch so I can get an hours rest.

Can you isolate anything that could be affecting the quality of your sleep? It's all very well doing a Sleeping Beauty but if your bed's uncomfortable or the room's too hot or too cold or you've had too much booze or caffine or food before you go to bed it can all affect the quality of sleep, and it's all about quality, not quantity.

Failing that, have you spoken to your GP about your sleep/tiredness problem?

twelveyeargap · 26/10/2006 09:30

I think the main thing is that you don't get enough restorative sleep when your night is broken. I think you get used to it as your baby gets older and then once they're going through the night, you'll learn to sleep through too.

I'm knackered all the time too, being pregnant, waking up for wees in the night and being stressed about stuff make me wake up too. Having a full night's kip sorts me out.

You'll survive. Just don't feel bad about not being energised every day!

QuootieSpookypie · 26/10/2006 09:32

Ill try everything... I know I was badly aneamic after birth, and never re-stocked on iron tablets after 1st week, but would that still effect me?

ill try GP after I try other things... I do get depression and I think its one of the symptoms so, he'll probably say its that...

Tiredness is a symptom of anaemia and it's possible you are still anaemic. If your ds is under a year old you should still get prescription iron tablets free with your maternity exemption card. Try eating more foods that are high in iron like cabbage and steak and cut down on caffine as it can inhibit the absorption of vitamins into the system.

If you're worried about it go and see your GP for a blood test to see if anything else can be done.

twelveyeargap · 26/10/2006 09:44

Ask to have your vitamin B12 levels checked. Breastfeeding & pregnancy can deplete your levels and vitamin b deficiency can also make you depressed. Since you're breastfeeding, I wouldn't like to recommend you taking supplements without speaking to your GP, but usually for depression and sleeplessness, a B complex does wonders.

A b12 deficiency can go hand in hand with anaemia so it's worth checking...

QuootieSpookypie · 26/10/2006 09:48

how do I take B12? is it in any food? I better ring GPs today and book myself in for all this...

Thanks

hiya, long time no see!
you should try exercising as it helps you sleep and feel more alive, i started an hour aerobics weekly run by hv and it did wonders (shame i haven't gone for a month) but def going tonight, an dh can cope with dd as its only an hour long, i push the buggy about loads but that doesnt seem to help.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/10/2006 10:49

Do you snore?

Snoring can prevent you from getting into a deep sleep (the bit of sleep that "refreshes" you).

It is also linked with Sleep Apnoea. Might be worth a trip to your GP to get it checked out.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/10/2006 10:51

here - a description of sleep apnoea I didnt want to try and explain it without it sounding scary

I have undergone a form of sleep study for my snoring.

twelveyeargap · 26/10/2006 11:14

B12 is in fish and dairy and most meat. If you can stomach it, calves liver has tons of it and even people with pernicious anaemia who don't have some enzyme (?) something anyway, that helps them absorb B12, get enough B12 in calves liver to absorb some of it.

People who are vegans often suffer from this as B12 is only contained in animal products.

My friend is pregnant at the moment and suffering severe tiredness and has been diagnosed with anaemia and B12 deficiency. She has to be restested shortly so they can decide whether to give her injections of the stuff. This is where i came up with all this info!

Hope you feel better soon.

QuootieSpookypie · 26/10/2006 11:18

hiya Littleducks!

Liver? No waaaaaaaay, I tried after birth, and it makes me gag. Thanks anyway!
