Should I be worried...?

My baby daughter will be five weeks old on Thursday. Usually she's a fairly good sleeper although the past few days she has been pretty unsettled and hasn't slept much in the daytime (unless it's on me). She is formula fed and has been quite constipated so I think her tummy has been a bit sore.she also had a busy weekend, with various grandparent visits (during which attention has been lavished on her for long periods of time).

Usually at night she will go down about 12 and will get back up between 3 and 4 for a feed, then up again between 7 and 8. Pretty predictable. However, last night she went down at 12.30 and slept right through till 7am (a better sleep than mine as I was up and down checking on her and wondering why she hadn't woken up).

She took her bottle as usual at 7 when we got up, and then kicked around on her mat for a little while, quite the thing. When she started to get grumpy I picked her up for a cuddle and she fell asleep almost immediately in my arms. That is unusual - usually it takes ages to rock her to sleep as she fights it.

Since then, she has basically slept all day long. I have woken her up a few times (by changing her nappy) to get her to eat etc but each time she's only managed a couple of ounces before falling asleep again. It was like she was fighting to keep her eyes open but just couldn't. This is really unlike her, usually she's pretty lovely during the day.

However, in the short instances she has been awake, she seems fine and pretty normal (other than a flushed face). No temperature, constant wet nappies and no vomiting other than the occasional posset.

She is currently awake, kicking on her mat and making lots of noise after finishing a five ounce bottle so she seems to be ok (face is still flushed though). I just find today's constant sleep so worrying as it's so unlike her!

Does the sleep sound like cause for alarm to anyone? Is it possible she was simply catching up on sleep after her sore tummy and busy weekend? I will phone the doctor tomorrow if she's the same I think. She's my first born so I'm definitely over anxious...

If she is so sleepy that you cannot rouse or wake her, then given her young age I would phone the doctors just to be sure.

But that said, it is not unusual for babies to have the odd really sleepy day.

Babies can have very sleepy days - around growth spurts, catching up on sleep and also if they are unwell with a cold etc.
Follow your instincts as a mum and if you are worried seek professional advice and call 111 if you feel it shouldn't wait until tomorrow. They can often advise over the phone. With such a young baby, you can never be too careful.
