How old is she? Ds still does this and he is 18mo!

Its a tough one. You want her to learn how to sleep by herself but you dont want to leave her crying. How old is she? My ds used to do this. Could she be falling asleep then waking up realising she's still hungry? Or is it just that she likes being with mum? It could be that when you put her in her moses basket/cot its cold and wakes her up. Maybe get one of those sleeping bag things that look abit like a dress, that'll keep her nice and warm. Or could you just try to calm her down without picking her up. Maybe stroke her hair, pat her back(depending on how old she is).

Sympathetic smile emoticon. I had this. No advice to give. I never let my son cry. For the first year he slept on me and I watched tv, did embroidery or chatted on the phone - not one dinner cooked!!! During one holiday dp took him for walks in buggy during the day - he screamed a lot but I wasn't there and it seemed less evil to be walking him than leaving him in a cot. He learned to sleep very well in his buggy. We ended up sleeping him in his buggy overnight too!! Then we put him in a double bed very early and I went to sleep with him and snuck out. Now, at 4, he happily says goodnight and "reads" a little bit before drifting off to sleep. A long haul but I feel happy that I didn't have to leave him to cry.

My niece was like this for the first 4 mths of her life and wore everyone out.
I suggested to SIL to take her to an osteopath and after about 3 visits they were able to lay her in bed on her back and she would sleep. Apparently her back was slightly out of alignment due to head being engaged during labour but then having a CS or something like that.
This may be worth a try. HTH x

Is this a very new baby or an older one?

shazzaronnie · 24/10/2006 18:31

Maybe you should have a look at the baby whisperer website, try the pick up put down method.
Or just try lieing him on his tummy and gently pat his back while singing to him. This used to work with my son.

'the no-cry sleep solution' worked for me when dd was 4 months old. she's now 5 months and sleeps without much fuss at all.

BIGlilBUBU · 24/10/2006 19:22

No cry sleep solution. Sounds good how does that work?

mears · 24/10/2006 19:23

Put a hot water bottle in the cot to heat it before you put her down. It is possibly the cold sheet that is waking her. Take the bottle out before you put her in.

BIGlilBUBU · 24/10/2006 19:24

Agree with mears, probably the cold waking her.

Hi we used to have this problem, I brought the baby whisperer problem solving book and got ds on a three hourly routine and practiced sshh patting ds to sleep on shoulder and placing him in cot as he fell asleep. It worked after a couple of goes. I thought I was going mad because ds would never sleep in cot he just screamed and screamed.

It does get better - keep up the good work you are a great mum xxxx

Tatties · 24/10/2006 19:43

A tip I read in the Mumsnet book was to lay a muslin cloth underneath her as she falls asleep on you, which will warm with her body heat. She may not be as disturbed by the cold sheet when you lay her down if the warm muslin is still under her.

But there's nothing wrong with picking her up when she cries if that's what soothes her. If shushing/patting works, great, but if not just do what you have to do. Don't leave her to cry and don't worry about bad habits - she will learn to sleep by herself when she is ready
