My 5 mth old DD has slept through the night from 7 weeks (8pm-6:30am) but I went to see the HV yesterday re her weight and she advised that I really need to start getting DD to nap during the day. At the moment, she'll only sleep if I take her out in the buggy. Have done two attempts so far, just after she's had her second morning feed. I close the curtains, keep things quiet, give her a teddy and a dummy. But she is wide awake and I'm having to put the dummy back in every 30 seconds. I stay in the room with her patting and shushing every so often but after 20 minutes she's still wide awake and crying her eyes out so I give up. Anyone got any pointers?

She is wide awake and can't go to sleep on demand.

When she sleeps in her buggy in the afternoon, does she still sleep all night?

Your health visitor was looking for something to say....

Do you think she needs to nap in the day? Is she overtired/collapsing with exhaustion and that is why she sleeps through the night? What is the worry about her weight?

If you think she needs to nap or you want her to, try putting her down a couple of hours after she first wakes - put her in the buggy if she'll sleep in the buggy but park it in your hall or whatever.

The HV had no right whatsoever telling you your dd needs to nap in the day!

If she wants to sleep she will.

My now two year old slept really well at night from a very young age but always struggled to nap in the daytime.
I decided that the for me, the night time sleep was more important than the day time so didn't push naps too much. She used to sleep for 30 mins around three times a day in my arms/in pram/in car. After a few months she started just needing to sleep after lunch and now sleeps for about and hour in the afternoon.

If she doesn't seem irritable or upset not having a nap then i wouldn't push it.
My dd was underweight for her age but it was never suggested that this was down to lack of daytime naps.
