Colicky baby - advice please!

Now I cannot believe there isn't already a thread about colicky babies but the fact I couldn't find one is, no doubt, testament to how sleep deprived I am feeling! I have a colicky 2 1/2 month old and and 1 1/2 year old toddler who is teething. I am really struggling! So tired! And, as selfish as this is, really struggling with having zero time for me as I'm having no evening.

Any advice welcome!!

In particular, just wondering about getting one of those vibrating bouncy chairs for the baby. Any experience of them working for colicky babies? We have a normal basic bouncy chair which she will be happy in for a bit. But only if she is happy to start with.

Many thanks in advance!

My DD had v bad colic and was then diagnosed with silent reflux. Turns out she has cows milk protein allergy. If you are EBF maybe try going dairy free for two weeks and see if that helps? It did for me. DD is now being mixed fed and we are waiting for a prescription for a suitable formula for her.

I am ebf but also a huge fan of milk and other dairy products. I have gone dairy free in the past but the other products are just not the same. I hope it's not that.

Not done anything re booking Dr appointment as just heard our house sale has fallen through. For the second time. We were meant to be moving next Friday. Whole process has been going on since May. Ho hum.

Bexster, you could be describing my situation right down to the dummy and the move! (We moved 2 months before DS was born and still haven't unpacked!)

We have all the same symptoms with DS and assumed it was wind, but infacol didn't stop the evening screaming. Nor did colocynth crystals or colief.

Our HV thinks he has reflux and we were prescribed infant gaviscon. Initially, I didn't use it properly - only gave it to him when he seemed to need it. HV says it needs to be given before every feed, the box says up to 6 doses a day. DS is exclusively BF, so can feed up to 9 times a day, so we're skipping the middle of the night feeds when I can't face trekking to the kitchen he is at his most settled. Yesterday he had gaviscon all day.

He has been much improved today. Napped for two hours in Moses basket (propped like yours). The longest day nap before this was 37mins. He also sat in my lap for a long time this morning, then lay on his playmat, without crying.

(Thing is, he also had his immunisations yesterday so I'm not yet convinced it's purely gaviscon having an effect.)

What has happened is the weirdest nappy I've seen on a BF baby (DD was BF until 15 months). So odd I took a picture to ask HV. Is there a way to share images for comment from experts on here? Reading this, I'm concerned it is constipation. How do I manage that with a BF baby?

Does your baby have lots of salivary bubbles, sometimes drool clear liquid, or vomit clear liquid with cheese-curd white bits in it? I was told the bubbles and drool were an indication of wanting to be sick, and the curd-like posseting suggested the milk was partially digested before coming back up. Therefore ... reflux.

On the dummy ... We were advised to try this as well but DS refused. FWIW, our dentist told us dummies are not great (DD had one which is why I was trying to avoid one with DS), but said if she sucked her thumb to give the dummy straight back because thumbs are worse.

A dummy saved my sanity ...currently weaning him to only use at nap time/night time

Thinking of you all as this was prime colic time for us

Am currently at the beginning of the mega bed time feed. At least, I am if she doesn't break off and start screaming again :/

Yes! She drools lots and has loads of bubbles and often pukes clear with lumpy bits in! At first I thought she must have a nasty bug and then as she didn't seem ill I thought it must be normal. Oh goodness I am stupid! And to think this is baby no 2?! You'd think I'd know better :/ It's frustrating as well because I have taken her to the doctors quite a few times because she's got a permanently sticky eye (physiological apparently).

Re poo it possibly is constipation as gaviscon is meant to cause that - poor little babies :( my friend's first baby was on gaviscon (but bottle fed so it might be different) and he would do little pellets of poo. I'm sorry but I don't know what you do to help.

Bex, I find if I feed lying right back, with DS draped over me feeding against gravity, he vomits a lot less.

He's my second as well. I guess I'm a first time mother of this wee boy. Smile and he also had a very sticky eye. It was a fast delivery and I was told it's almost certainly a blocked tear duct because all the mucous wasn't properly squeezed out of everywhere.

On his nappy, it is constipation. Just been confirmed by GP, so another thing to figure out. I absolutely hate giving him meds. But.... He is right now sleeping on my lap, so a second night where I might get to watch some TV. Still think it might be immunisation rather than Gaviscon. I'll make a judgement call on how effective it has been after the weekend.

Good luck with the feed!

bexster5 · 09/01/2015 20:36

Thanks choccie - last night's feed didn't go well. She kept puking over both of us mid feed. Then we'd start the process again... it's going a bit better so far tonight. Fingers crossed! I think I need to experiment with this anti-gravity feeding... Just want to find a way to reliably feed her and get her to sleep! Hopefully will get Dr appointment on Monday re reflux...
