Sleep and Dummies

My 9 week old baby girl can get herself to sleep during the day unaided but at night she utterly refuses. I have lef her to cry for 2 weeks now and she cries everynight for up to 2 hours. Cannot take it any longer, I have used a dummy for the last few nights and that has worked but as soon as it falls out she howls again. Trying to break sleep associations with breast feeding. Any advice?

oh ippa, I feel for you! we did cc on dd (now 3mths) and a few times she yelled for 2 hrs. pure temper. sorry I cant help tho, as dd never had a dummy, and we did try a few times, if you want to get rid of it do it once and for all and keep on going!

Instead of using a dummy, could you try rocking her until her eyes are falling asleep and then put her down while she is still a tiny bit awake? This would help her to settle herself and would not give you the agony of hearing her cry for 2 hours. She may cry when you put her down but hopefully for not as long.
Also...I have a 3month old and I went through a phase where she wouldn't go down at night. It turned out she was overtired - we were putting her to bed at 9. We pushed it back to 8 and then 7.30 and now she normally sleeps 11-12 hours. So hang in there!

Hi ippa. Have you tried white noise? I found that my 8 week old dd fell asleep every morning to the sound of the hairdryer (with no dummy). I've now invested in a CD of a vacuum cleaner (dh thinks I have gone doolally) which I play to her at bedtime. Not quite as effective as the hairdryer but if I catch her at the right time, before she gets overtired, then it does the trick.

Try a few household appliances to see if it works, and then you can get various CDs from www.YourFavouriteShop.com.

Best of luck
