is this dangerous at 6 months? I find I spend all nitgh going adn turning him back over - I'm scared he'll either sufocate when face down - or i hear the thump as his arm gets stuck in teh cot bars......he's too young for cot bumpers and can rol in his growbag - but unfortuntaly only teh 1 way. just when I thought i might get some slepp at long last.......:-))

I've always heard that once they start rolling over there's no point getting up and turning them over. We put ds (9 months) on his back but he's now rolling over onto his side. Presuambly if your ds is rolling over he'd roll back again if he was uncomfortable. BTW, cot bumpers bad for babies who can sit up as well - Mothercare catalogue full of warnings. Apparently they might use them to pull themselves up and fall out of the cot.

i think that it is absolutely fine once they can roll as it means they can move themselves around (even if not onto back then at least lift their head if they had any trouble breating)...i don't think it's dangerous (someone correct me if i'm wrong) but understand why you'd want to go in a roll him back...does he get distressed by it? if not i'd leave him be...

Heathcliffscathy · 18/04/2004 18:35

that was breathing not breating

I know how you feel dd started doing it at 6mths to and I was realy edgy going to bed at night. Now I realise she has a lovely sleep that way and seems to be much cosier and snuggly. I used to make sure I put her in on her back but whenever I checked on her shed gone onto her front. Hope you feel better with it soon x

It is scary at first. But now he can move he can find his comfy position and sleep really well. You'd be fighting a losing battle if you tried to stop it. (and you can have a laugh at all the weird positions he gets himself into during the night!)

If he can roll over it is safe. Don't worry about it and let him find the sleeping position he is most comfortable with.

My dd2 rolls herself into a ball. On her tummy. V weird but she seems happy.

oiseau · 18/04/2004 19:22

My ds started doing this at 6 months and slept better for it.

Lisa78 · 18/04/2004 19:51

Hi littleweed
I know what you mean - DS2 is 5 .5 months and has started doing just that. If I find he's rolled on to his tummy, I roll him on to his back but don't see theres much I can do otherwise. He seems to sleep equally well whatever position he gets into

hercules · 18/04/2004 20:00

DD has been sleeping on her side since she was 2 months (she will not sleep on her back and has always woken up when we've tried to rollher back. It's ok now but when she was younger she had ti be held like that until she went to sleep.

littleweed · 19/04/2004 08:54

thanks everyone _ I feel a bit better now knowing thats its not unusual, and is an ok thing for them to do. am trying hard not to be a parnoid first time mother (but ususally failing!) :-))

my son started to roll over 2nite @ 12.30 am kind of in an awkward recovery position and he seemed more settled. Partner now in bedroom making sure he's ok.Prob won't sleep 2nite making sure he's ok!

Ds1 (now 4) began sleeping on his side at 2 and a half months I would roll him onto his back but he would just roll back onto his side. So doc suggested that he was probably more comfi like that and that is why he kept rolling, and to roll a towel up and place it next to his belly and along his legs so that it would stop him rolling all the way onto his front. It worked and then when he got to about 5-6 months I removed the towel because I knew he was safer as he was older.
