Comforters in bed?

We have a eight-week-old and some family members have suggested giving her a comforter to have in bed with her at night. However, I tried it a few nights with a soft fleecy square of material with a teddy attached (small) but it terrified me - she kept burying her face and I was worried it could interfere with breathing.

Do you allow babies to sleep with anything in the cot? If so, what kind of comforter? Has anybody tried the Cuski, which seems to be safer (used by midwives?)

I must admit, my daughter has quite a few soft things in her cot (she is 13 months though, and in a big cot bed). She never had anything when she was in the moses basket, but when she started in her cot, she had a little taggie blanket (square about 10in x 10in), and gradually soft toys started to creep their way in. She now has her taggie, 4 cuddly toys and a little comforter with a rabbit attached to it. She roams around her cot in her sleep, and I quite often find her snuggled right up close to them. It is probably not recommended.

Mm dd has a comforter the type you mention and we've just started leaving it in with her at night she's 5 months, she's had it since she was tiny but we took it away once she was asleep Im confident now that she can move it away from her face I personally wouldn't leave her with it at 8 weeks

My little one has had a cuski since she was able to move things off her face. We have the bamboo one, in fact we have two. A daytime one and another that lives in her cot. She loves rubbing her face in it and holding onto the ball.

I recommend them but would wait until better hand control.

DS had a Cushki gifted to him at that age. He still has it in his bed, but his comforter of choice is a toy donkey. Cushkis are fab, very tactile and snuggly and the fabric is more breathable than some fleecy things. My midwife recommended I tuck it down my top or sleep with it first so it smelt of me when I have it to baby. I tried this and woke up clutching it snuggled under my chin!
If your DD does start to show an attachment, I would buy a second one and then you'll have a spare whilst one is in the wash - my friend's son had 5 and would often have them all sat on his lap at once!

My 14 week DS has in the last fortnight started needing to rub his face with and fiddle with a muslin to sleep. I don't worry as they are pretty thin so he could breath through it and also I just gently move it from his face if I see it covering.

Thanks everyone, I guess common sense would say it's unlikely she will end up with it in a dangerous position but I agree, I'll wait until she is able to grasp things and move her head a bit better. She's not formed her own attachment yet so there seems little point in manufacturing it (especially if I'm not happy with it).

Out of interest, when did your babies start having better hand control and were able to move things away from their face? I'm a bit clueless about the stages of development :-)

our DD always pulled her little toy over her face, when she was really little she seemed to move into a position where her face was covered, she still does it to this day, we move things away but she just moves them back. as someone else said as long as she can breath through them I wouldn't worry.

My dd has always had a muslin in her cot as her comforter she even went through a stage of only sleeping with it over her face. Which is terrifying but they are breathable and are light enough to gently move when asleep. She is now 8 months and we have just entered 3 teddy.s glow worm and taggy, best things we've done as when she wakes in middle of nights she has a little play and cuddle with them then falls back to sleep.

I have a breathable soft toy from a company called Safe Dreams - I also bought a cot wrap from them.
