I think it depends, how often do you give it? What time? With my ds I stretched out the gaps between feeds (ie - and these timings are very approximate as memory all gone to pieces! - not between midnight and five am, then 10pm and 5am, bedtime til 5am, then not until waking time at around 6 - 6.30) until I was confident that any wakings couldn't be hunger. During this time I comforted him back to sleep rather than cc'd. Other people swear by watering down the formula with water until the baby isn't getting any calories and this makes them less likely to wake for the feed. I think my ds would just have substituted a water habit for a milk habit
I decided to do this after reading Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Richard Ferber, who says you ideally shouldn't do sleep training until you are no longer feeding at night, and he actually says the feeds may keep your child awake by activating their digestive systems etc and the mere act of cutting out feeds can lead to better sleep. Does this help? I'm really no expert on this but happy to share experiences of non-sleeping babies

ekm, I agree with aloha and Richard Ferber about the feeding in the night. I don't know how old your baby is but from about 3 months they are technically able to go a long stretch without a feed, at least 10 hours. Lots of babies don't of course but it's kind of reassuring to know they won't fade away or be deprived if they don't have a feed in the night.

thnax guys!

i tried watering down the feed though when we ended up with just water it took about an hour to get her back to milk.
She was around 6mths though.

i will try the weaning of the milk as i no she doesn't need the milk as last night she slept 10hrs without one!!!!
