For those not using sleeping bags....

Hi all, I'm due my first baby in February and so I'm aware that it will still be quite chilly at night (we don't keep the heating on).
I am also undecided about whether to use sleeping bags and I know that the baby has to be a certain size/weight before you can use them anyway, so I just wanted to ask some advice.
If not using sleeping bags, what should my baby be sleeping in in winter? How many layers of blankets (if one fold counts as a layer IYSWIM)?
I'm feeling a bit like I have no clue what I'm doing!

I'm planning on using the Love to dream Swaddle (jo Jo maman Bebe) it's a cross between a Swaddle and a sleep bag and can be used from 0-3 months and then 3-6 months. It's got great reviews.
Also saves un wrapping them when it's feed time in the night.

Excellent! Do you just use one swaddle and just a sleepsuit underneath? Or a vest plus sleepsuit?

We used swaddle cloths then moved onto sleeping bags.

We used cellular blankets at first (vest, sleepsuit and blanket, November baby) then moved into a sleeping bag when she hit the weight limit. Tried swaddling but she hated it. Sleeping bags are by far the easiest in my opinion.

The rule of thumb is that baby needs one more later than you would. Until my ds was about 2 he would wear a vest and sleepsuits in winter so from about October to april depending on our forever changing weather. If in the summer it was boiling then I'd just remove sleepsuit and/or vest but leave sleep bag on.

Ds wouldn't be swaddled and wouldn't go in a sleeping bag either! General rule of thumb is what you would wear plus one layer. So if you're wearing cotton pjs and have a duvet then your baby should wear a vest, baby grow and a thick blanket (or 2!) they should be warm to touch but not hot Smile

Sleeping bags are a saviour if you have a wriggly baby....DS1 was happy being swaddled in the first week or 2 but as soon as he became a bit more active he hated it....he managed to wriggle free from the Gro swaddle and the JoJo Maman Bebe one and then I bought the Dream Swaddle. He went ballistic....as soon as I zipped it up...took me an hour to calm him down. It is quite restrictive. Now we're in sleeping bags it's so much easier at night just picking him up in it and putting him down. Swaddles and blankets can be a faff if you're having to rearrange them every time you're up to feed.
