My toddler wakes up from afternoon nap and cries hysterically

for about an hour. Completely inconsolable. Doesn't seem to matter how long nap is, whether it is enforced or she just drops off in car or sofa.

Discuss.... anyone had this?

She is now 2and half but been happening for ages - thought it was a phase - which I guess it is but seems a long one.

My DD did this for ages - usually for half an hour. Nothing would change it, just had to sit it out, and cuddle her for that time. Didn't seem to matter whether she woke up in her own time or was woken up by us either. And it didn't happen in the morning, only for daytime naps. She did grow out of it eventually, you'll be glad to hear.

We have this too (ds 20 mo).
Sometimes he comes out of it really quickly other times it takes ages to soothe him.
Cbeebies often helps!
Sorry not v helpful, but maybe looks like lots of toddlers do this?

Do you wake her, or does she wake spontaneously?

DS 17 mo does this! He wakes in an absolutely foul mood in the afternoon - I don't wake him but leave him to wake when he is ready. I was getting concerned but then 2 of my friends mums have both told me recently it's quite normal for them to be arsey after an afternoon nap? I think it's because he feels groggy. If I have a sleep in the afternoon it takes me ages to wake up proerly so it's suppose it's just the same for little people. Only they can't say "bugger off and leave me alone till I've woken up properly"...

Drusella - thats what I think, i used to work in Greece and have a Siesta - i always felt really disorientated when I woke up.

She does it if she wakes up naturally or is woken, pretty candles.

Oh well won't worry about it then. I often put Finding Nemo on for 20 minutes to calm her down. She does seem to like to have a sleep in the afternoon though.
