My DD is a week old and hates being put to sleep on her back. I have sat through long crying spells but end up putting her on her stomach for a minute or two and she falls asleep no problem...what do I do?? i have heard stomach is the worst position because of cot death etc. Anyone else have this problem???

It certainly is a problem, as many babies do prefer this position. Can you compromise on her sleeping on her side? It's definitely worth a try.

my dd slept on her tummy and i knew it was wrong[trained nursery nnurse and night nanny!!] but she woul donly sleep like that otherwise she would scream the place down and i`m not exaggerating!! in the end i spent a few sleepless night watching her[she was only a week old too] in case she stopped breathing and then i gave up through sheer exhaustion and she slept like that from then on..sorry i know it doesnt help but i seriously feel for you as your torn between right and wrong ..my dd would also only lie on her tummy in those bouncy chairs which certainly drew funny looks from people!!

Would she sleep reclined if you raised the head of her bed ?

foundintranslation · 26/09/2006 20:33

can you turn her once she's asleep? Ithink the SIDS foundation advise to turn them onto their backif you find them on their tummy but not to feel you have to stay up all night checking.

Go here to read about the Cotlife campaign and here to buy a babesafe mattress cover. Hey, its worked in NZ, and what have you got to lose? My little one is also a tummy only sleeper, and this gives me some peace of mind.

Think the idea of Mattress Wrapping have been covered on MN before and benefits are unproven iirc.

Check out this thread or this one for example.

LISZ, well its very hard to prove anything about anything though, isn't it. There are always for and against, and some of the stuff about it is very convincing. Certainly the rate of SIDS in NZ is remarkably low since mattress wrapping. I'm not saying its guaranteed safe, but it seems to me that you might as well have one...like I said, what do you have to lose?
