3 month old nap and wake times

How much awake time should a three month old have? At the moment it seems that DS can't stay awake for much more than an hour and trying to get this amount of naps into the day is draining (esp as he will only nap for 45 mins at a time).

At what kind of age will he be able to stay awake for longer and have less frequent naps?

Thanks

Hello! I have just written a post of my own because DD is not sleeping through at night, but i believe at 3 months they are usually able to stay awake no longer than 2 hours. It might be less at the moment if he is going through a growth spurt. Hth

See the link for average awake times www.mybabysleepguide.com/2013/02/average-sleep-charts-by-age.html

No you are not, every baby is different. If this is your first grab sleep when you can, my first child fit this, second definitely did not and my third's wakeful periods are longer (though I do attempt to get her sleeping more. Usually by pushing her around in the buggy).

At 3 months old DS2's schedule was basically 45 minutes-1.15 minutes awake followed by a 45 minute nap, and a feed every 2 hours.

I've had a 45 minute napper since birth - he's only just started to go 60-90 minutes since he turned 6 months and we dropped down to two naps.

He can last much longer awake after a longer nap but it's a chicken and egg scenario!

Can I also ask…my DS starts yawning after about 1 hour, so i then take him to the bedroom and help him sleep - we are still rocking to sleep (Will work on self settling when I am not so shattered and he is taking less frequent naps). He takes about another 15-30 mins to drift off to sleep….is all of this time counted as his 'wake time'? So actually he is awake about 1 1/2 hours between naps, even though for the last 1/2 hour he would not be happy to be awake and we are working on him getting to sleep…??

…and if he is taking this length of time, am i taking him to his bedroom too early? But if i don't he starts getting fractious.

Thanks.

Hi they can usually last between 1-2 hours at that age so sounds like ur doing fine! My ds is 5mo and has started having 1.5/2 hours twice a day so it does get easier! The 1/2 settling him i would say does count as his awake time too, it also used to take 30 for my ds to be rocked to sleep but hes got better over time with little help or rocking from me as like u i was too tired to tackle it! I was told to look for the yawning and aim to get him down on the 3rd yawn! Worked wonders for us as that was when he was actually really for sleep but its not for everyone! Might b worth a try!

If it helps OP, when I first started getting my DD into a routine, she could only manage to stay awake for 1.5hrs but then would only sleep for 30-45mins. I tried to allow her to do this as much as I could and let her take the lead. Gradually over the next few months she has adapted her naps herself to what I think is a recommended routine by many baby experts. I personally would let him tell you when and for how long he wants to sleep and then he will stay awake for longer and sleep for longer as he gets older.
Bring able to settle himself is a key milestone I think as then it means he can move through a sleep cycle (30-45 mins I think?) and stay napping for longer.

Just my experience obviously - all babies are different! Smile
