Nighttime nappies

Just wanted to know whether this problem is normal. My 3 month old dd does will not settle if she has a dirty nappy. She is being breastfeed for the 7am and 6.15pm feeds. The last two nights she has been up at 4.30 and 5.30. I go in and change her then settle her with cooled water and breast milk. Previous to this she was sleeping through until 6-7am. Do I just wait it out until she adjusts her cycle?

Horse, are you sure it's the nappy and not just the light / birds / time of year and just coincidence that you go and change her / give her a drink that makes her go back to sleep ? It seems loads of babies are waking at the moment early.

Horse - poo or wee? if its just wee it is (IMO) unlikely she is uncomfortable, especially if you are using a disposable. In fact, changing her is likely to wake her up even more.

If she's pooing a lot - once at 4.30 then again at 5.30, she might have a tummy upset??

Thanks for replying.
Tillysmummy - I think that she is waking up because of the nappy because whenever she poos - during midday nap/7-10.30pm nap etc she wakes up and insists on being changed. Maybe the likelihood is that she comes into her light sleep and realises she has poo in her nappy then objects to it.
Enid - It is one poo, once on Tuesday morning at 4.30 and once this morning at around 5.30.
On both mornings I settled her with water and breast milk. We both went back to sleep until 8am.

If it's poo then definitely that's the problem. I have found poo in my dd's nappies recently in teh mornings when I changer her - why is this - she never used to pooh at night ?

Horse - IME, my 3 have always pooed more (and done funny runnier poos to boot!) when teething. They also weren't happy with a dirty nappy, and I agree with Rozzy, if you don't change them pretty quickly they do get nasty sore bums. I wonder if she could be getting her first teeth and this has changed her routine?

Horse · 27/03/2002 22:03

I'll see how it goes tonight. I will change her as quickly as possible if I hear her moaning and then put her back to sleep. I have made sure that the room is pitch black with no light entering. We were just starting the 3 to 4 month routine, hopefully we can get back on course.

DD woke up at 5.30am. Convinced that it was a dirty nappy I went in straight away and changed it. It was just wet. Couldn't settle her so had to give her cooled water and bf. Again we both slept until 8am so worrying a bit about the routine - maybe she won't get enough food for a 7pm bedtime (and hasn't had enough for the last few days) hence the early rising (coupled with poo previously). I will try and make sure she has her 38ozs before 7pm.

Horse... a lot of babies - including my 2 - are waking up earlier right now.... regardless of black out lining...
Seems to me that your baby is doing the same. She may be hungry... at 3 months, 12 hours without a feed is long. Mine did that at 3 1/2 months and they have been considered very young themselves.

Horse · 28/03/2002 19:42

Pupuce - DD is still having a 10.30pm feed, 6ozs of formula. She is a big girl, at 12 weeks she weighed 15lbs, she is now nearly 14 weeks. Do you think that the 6ozs is enough for her?

I'd say yes....(she should drop that feed in a few weeks anyway - you ant her to eat in the daytime not the night) I really think she is waking up earlier as is my baby because it is getting lighter and lighter outside.
Have you had a look at the recent early waking thread ? I did post quite a bit + some stuff Gina Ford recommended for small babies as well.

Horse · 28/03/2002 22:23

Pupuce - Yes I did read the early waking thread but because of finding the poos I thought that dd was waking because of them. I have her room pitch black. She tended to wake closer to 6am rather than 7am anyway - I was hoping that she would wake later once she was on solids so was relaxed about this. When she wakes up earlier than 6am should I do as I am doing - settle her with cooled water and then bf? Anything else just doesn't do it.

I think you are doing the right thing... it is tricky - it will get better soon (and anyway we are changing the clocks this WE...).
Don't be tempted to start solids early as at first they won't make any difference as she won't eat a lot !!!
