What is it with the second part of the night?!

DS2 is 4.5 months. We're currently going through the 4 month regression so sleep is a bit all over the place. In general since he was born he'll go back into a deep sleep after the first waking and he'll stay asleep after being transferred back to his Bednest but after any other waking through the rest of the night I'll transfer him and he'll just wake after a few minutes. For example tonight he was sound asleep by 8:30 then woke for the first time at 2 am (this is good going for him and me as I go to bed when he does but it can be as early as 10:30!) I fed him, waited for him to be in a deep sleep, transferred him back and was awake again by 2:45. He was awake but just wriggling around so tried Ewan the dream sheep which almost got him back to sleep but not quite. Gave up at 3:50 and fed him again and here I am at 4:20 still awake. The rest of the night pans out the same way until I give up and go downstairs at about 6:30. I end up dreading that first wake up as I know that's it for the night and I won't get anymore sleep. Does anyone else have the same problem?

How are you judging whether he is in a deep sleep? Someone recently told me to check by lifting DS(3m) arm up a bit and dropping it - if there is no resistance he is deeply asleep. Also his breathing changes to those tiny shallow almost imperceptible breaths. If I transfer him before he is asleep like this he will do exactly what you describe.

Ps I feel your pain - I often give up and being him in beside me so I can at least dose.

I do use the arm drop test and always wait at least a good 20 minutes as I've been told it takes that long on average for them to go into a deep sleep. I think that's why it's so frustrating as I'm so careful to make sure he's deeply asleep before I try moving him. I even put my hand across and warm the area on the mattress where his head will be! Maybe I should just try putting him down straight after feeding and not bother with all the faffing and see what happens!

Hugely feel your pain, I hold my breath putting DD back down and put it off for ages cos I'm scared of her waking up Hmm
No advice I'm afraid, when in this situation I do as a PP said and end up bringing her in with me just to get that bit if extra rest.
