What are you nap time routines please? If any! Don't know what I am doing or if I should even bother!

Hi, recently taken sides of cot off on ds cot bed. He is sleeping very well in the night so far, it is daytime naps which are doing my head in.
Basically since I took sides from cot he doesn't sleep during the day! He always used to sleep for 2 hours in his cot without fail after lunch. Now he just wants to play and run around.
Have tried putting him back in bed several times, tried giving him a cup of milk.
The thing which annoys me the most is the fact that he is so tired! He has been falling asleep at the dinner table in the evenings! (something he has never done before)

Should I drop the nap, leave him in his room playing in the hope he will fall asleep??
Sorry for ramble but don't know what to do.

I am very keen on sleep - my ds is 3.5 and still has 2 hours in the afternoon at home and at nursery. I think I'd put the cot sides back on!!

robin3 · 19/09/2006 12:29

Might have to try to wind him down like night time so make sure room is pitch dark, read a story etc. DS1 is 2.7 and still needs a nap every lunchtime. We don't have any problem at home (with cot sides up) but at his grandparents (again in cot) he struggles because it's too light in his room.

I really don't want to put cot back together as he is doing so well at night times.

Dh alomost put them back on the other day, I wouldn't let him, don't want to go backwards if that makes sense. Just want him to sleep!
The other day when I went out he fell asleep in the buggy at 5pm!

Might try to read him a book and cuddle then before naps. He is downstairs now with me now winging!

Could you try lying down with him until he falls asleep?

mumfor1standfinaltime · 19/09/2006 12:35

Habe tried that but he just keeps getting out of bed. Have tried to lay with him downstairs too on bean bag but he just wont sit still!

Have now decided that nap times ar no more.Fed up with the whole thing now!!

Going out in an hour so you can guarantee ds will go to sleep in the buggy.

my ds is 3 and still really needs a nap.but isn't keen. our routine is to call it" cuddles and stories"! we both lie on my bed and have a couple of stories and then just lie quietly together and he goes off in about 5/10 mins.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 19/09/2006 13:35

longjohnalexmum, maybe I need a different approach then. I suppose as he gets older I will need to try different things. At the moment he is in the kitchen turning light switch on and off grrr...
Right he is now collapsed on bean bag looking very tired, can't wait to go out now in the hope he will sleep.

think it completely depends on the child and the day personally. DS pretty much gave up most of his day time naps at 2.3yrs he had been trying to drop them from 18mths but I tried to persist sometimes successfully sometimes not. ?Now he is 3 next month and have no chance of a sleep unless he is ill or been extremely busy. DD is 9mths and even she somedays will only have a quick 20min nap.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 19/09/2006 13:49

Nemo, guess I see what you mean.
He can go without a nap if we are out or have different routine for the day. I suppose I miss my nap too, as I start work at 6am I sometimes sneak in a nap for myself or I use the time to catch up with housework!!
I also don't like seeing him so tired, it's obvious some days that he needs his bed. My baby is becoming a toddler and I have to live with it I guess lol!

Now off out, let me time how long it takes for him to drop off lol!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 20/09/2006 11:51

He dropped off in 10 mins.

Today I am going mad as he was awake at 5am playing with noisy toys in his room and he hasn't slept since, he just now almost fell asleep at the dinner table, so I took him up to bed, guess what he doesn't want to stay in bed. He is now downstairs with me running around.

Please someone out there must have had same experience? He is tired too, he is fighting it so badly and it's making him and me grumpy!!
