4 month regression- how long did yours last?

I think we've been in it for 2-3 weeks now (I've lost track)- maybe even a week or so longer if I count the gradual deterioration to the current state of affairs! My 19 week old used to do a lovely 8.30-4.30/5.30 sleep and now we have wake ups at roughly 9.30, 00.15, 02.50, 05.30, 06.30 and 07.50. The 02.50/3.00 wake up is often for an hour or more and isn't usually settled with a feed where as the midnight wake up and 5.30 or 6.30 one is usually satisfied by a feed.
Feeling more and more sleep deprived by the day!
The amount of time she's going between naps is longer too (was aprox 1.5-2hrs, now 2-3 hrs depending on what we're doing), and totally feed time (EBF) over 24hrs has reduced from 1hr-1hr 10 mins down to 45-50 mins (she's a very efficient feeder).
Just wondered whether there's light to be found at the end of the tunnel soon?

Before the four month sleep regression my dd used to pretty much sleep through. The week leading up to 4 months it all changed and she's now almost 5 1/2 months and she's still getting up 2-4 times a night :(
Last night was the first time I refused to breast feed her because I've been feeling she's just using it as a way to get back to sleep (she doesn't self settle and goes mad if you put her down drowsy or semi asleep). We offered her milk in bottle incase she was hungry but she wouldn't take it. I'm hoping to do the same tonight!

Hope you get better nights soon-it's not fun

Mummyk1982 · 12/08/2014 20:52

She's already woken after 40 mins tonight :-(

5 months! DD is 9 months now and still waking twice a night. She slept like a dream until about 15 weeks.

mummy2pickle · 12/08/2014 21:02

I think I'm going through this too with my 4.5 month old. She used to sleep 8.30 till 4 feed then till 7.30. For the last week or so she will go to sleep at 8.30 for 20 minutes then be wide awake and will not settle again it takes us about two hours to settle her. Then she'll wakeat 2 for a feed and take about hour and half to settle which isn't fun. So I know how you're feeling I'm hoping it'll pass very soon in the last month her sleeping has been all over the place!

We were down to one wake up a night then it all went wrong at 16 weeks. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it lasted near on 11 months, with the worst stretch being between 8&11 months where we had ten wake ups a night minimum up to twenty on a bad night.

It was absolute hell and I have no words of wisdom. You do just plough through but it's shit, completely shit.

beccajoh · 12/08/2014 21:07

DD was about a year (bloody nightmare - she had been sleeping through). DS about ten minutes.

FelixFelix · 12/08/2014 22:34

DD slept 8-11 then back down after a feed until 6am until 4 months. Then it all went tits up and shes now almost 8 months and still waking hourly most nights Sad Occasionally she will only wake up 11, 1, 3 and 6 but it's quite rare.

Mummyk1982 · 12/08/2014 23:00

Was desperately hoping to hear some stories of it all being over in a matter of weeks!!!
She's been harder tonight than any other night. We gave up trying to get her back to sleep in the end- we appeared to be annoying her by doing it, so she laid on the sofa with us and watched tv til she fell asleep- something I swore I'd never ever ever leg happen!!!

During her 3rd month, my LO managed a stretch of 6 hours. It then went downhill to the point where she was waking every 1-2 hours. She is now 5 months and things have improved a little but she wakes approx 2-4 times every night.

makeminea6x · 13/08/2014 08:31

For most of my friends babies it only lasted about a month.
For me, DD never had it - she was a terrible sleeper until 4.5 months and we moved her out of our room and sleep gradually improved.
DS was a good sleeper and then 4 months hit. Talk about a shock to the system! He is now 7 months and things have been better for a couple of weeks. He started improving at 5.5 mo when we moved him out of our room but he's now on 1-2 short wake-ups a night which is better than before, and manageable for me.

NorahBone · 13/08/2014 08:31

Between 2 and 4.5 months minibones stopped waking at night, except for the odd growth spurt. Since then he's slept right through about 3 times. He's 9 months and usually wakes twice between 9pm and 7am.

keepitgoing · 13/08/2014 09:16

it went gradually downhill from four months until I night weaned and did gradual withdrawal at 6.5m. at 9m now she sleeps through.

keepitgoing · 13/08/2014 09:17

at our worst it was a three hour stretch then every 1.5-2 hours, boob demanded each time. this lasted months. was hell.

commsgirl · 13/08/2014 09:24

DD was sleeping through the night from quite early on. When she was about 3.5 months we had two weeks where she woke half hourly-hourly. She's now 4.5 months and I'd say she sleeps through five nights out of seven.

mrsmugoo · 13/08/2014 09:29

MummyK ours was 3 weeks but I sleep trained after 3 weeks because I was losing the plot and self settling helped him send himself back to sleep after the non/feeding wake ups so I only needed to get up and tend to him once a night rather than 5 or 6!

Mummyk1982 · 13/08/2014 10:10

Mrsmugoo- how old were they when you sleep trained and what did you do?

OP posts:
mrsmugoo · 13/08/2014 10:51

He was about 16/17 weeks and we we're co-sleeping.

I needed to get him in his cot as every tiny wriggle we were waking each other up and he was taking up too much space in the double bed and it was too hot.

I couldn't lift him into the cot asleep (I tried) as it has fixed sides and even in the highest setting it was still too hard to lean orb fans lower him in without waking him so out of necessity I needed to get him self settling so I could lift him in drowsy/awake.

I tried PUPD, shush/pat and gradual retreat and none of them worked - they seemed to stimulate and work him up into a rage so in the end I did a version of controlled crying.

It took about 3 days and he finally found his two middle fingers to suck on and settle himself off to sleep.

We went from 5-6 wake ups a night to dreamfeed plus one other feed at between 3-5am. All other wake ups he self settled.

Mummyk1982 · 13/08/2014 14:29

Wow that sounds great. I'm not sure if I can manage controlled crying. I left her for 5 mins this morning and she wound herself up even more! I know you have to be consistent with it. I may have to think about it in a week or so if this continues!

With the cc it was a mid-level tired/frustrated grizzle. With the other methods it was full blown kick off.
