Getting two DCs to fall asleep by themselves.

Our two DCs have always been dreadful sleepers. DD is now 4 and in school; DS is 1.9. Night wakings are a separate issue, but the one we need to tackle first is going to bed.

Both DCs need to be cuddled to sleep. DS generally takes a lot longer than DD but this is improving since we started leaving him in bed rather than transferring him to his cot. However this situation needs both of us present and life would be so much easier if just one parent could do bedtime.

So how to go about it? There's no way DD can go to bed first if there's just one of us doing bedtime as DS is too young to be quiet or to entertain himself. DS takes so long though that DD's bedtime would become too late.

I'm thinking that tomorrow we might have a story and milk downstairs, then DH or I could get them both to bed and stay on the landing between their rooms to get them back to bed when they inevitably get up. I can't see this working though. DD is determined to have her snuggle and DS is a determined crier.

Any suggestions please?
