My DD is 7Weeks old. She falls asleep on my chest and recently has taken to waking up and screaming when put on her back.
However, if I put her down on her tummy she will stay asleep for a good 3 hours if not more!!!
Don't like to put her down on her tummy, and am checking her frequently to make sure she's OK. But it's the only chance I get of doing anything. Also DS1 was a bit of an angel when it came to his naps during the day. not sure what to do

Advice Please...

dd always slept on her tummy, she was diagnosed with reflux at 6 weeks so drs said that was why she screamed when i put her on her back, they dont always have to be sick to have reflux so maybe she is uncomfortable on her back and it might be worth seeing a dr to rule out any medical problems

she is now nearly 3 and still sleeps on her front with her bum in the air, i sleep on my front too and i can see how it is more comfortable

My ds sleeps on his front (has done since 6 weeks when I figured he was happier that way, duh!) he's now 7 months, my niece slept on her front from 3 days old, shes nearly 2 now. I end up on my front now too. Think we just need to be a bit more vigilant (sp??) but they're fine! hth

Nulnulcat - I'm having one of those "Senior moments" - What exactly is Reflux? And what are the symptoms(SP?) that go with it?

sunita basically reflux is like heartburn in babies. after they have fed they can vomit their feeds up but it can be silent reflux where the stomach acid comes back up but they are not sick with it

babies with it have trouble feeding, they arch their backs and wont settle and very often hate being put down on their backs the only way i could get dd 2 sleep was lying on my tummy with me sat up,

you really need to see a dr and get a peadiatric referral as the symptons can be other things as well and there are loads of different medications you can give to help alleviate the problem

Some babies also just hate sleeping on their backs. My dd did and in the end I gave in and let her sleep on her tummy, just so I could get some sleep. The SIDS thing did bother me a bit but being on her tummy was the only risk factor that she had so I went with it. If you're really bothered it may be worth investing in one of those Angelcare monitors with the sensor pad that goes under the mattress to detect breathing. I think they're about £80 but it might give you a bit more peace of mind, especially if you read up on what to do IF it went off.

DD slept on her back from about 4 weeks old. Beat myself up about it nearly every night for ages, didn't admit it to anyone felt somehow ashamed, a really bad mother. Looking back though I followed every other bit of SIDS advice (and remember thats what is it advice, not the law!). She was fine. DS never had any trouble on his back which was a relief but I would have done the same again if I needed to. I know how you feel but as others have said some babies are like that.

Thanks Medulla - It's good to hear from someone who's been there!
DD still sleeping best on her tummy. Spoke to Mum and MIL both are dead against it!

my ds1 was also a tummy sleeper right from the beginning, the only people we would not admit it to were the midwife and HV (to the point where we would pick him up and turn him over if we saw them coming up the path)
ditto the Angelcare monitor - worth the extra money.

DS refused to sleep on his back - which led to all of us (me, DH and DS) all being terminally sleep deprived, so at 7 weeks I gave up and let him sleep on his tummy. The HV was horrified, but I sat and did a formal risk assessment with her as I would at work. After looking at the associated risks for sleep deprivation and the fact that this was the only risk factor for SIDS, she grudgingly agreed that perhaps it was alright......
We never looked back.

I just wanted to add that my LO at 7 weeks also sleeps on his front. Previously he wa on his side, but would always end up on his front by himself. He's a very windy boy, and it seems to help him sleeping in this way. The HV, doctor and other "officials" look at you as if you're a potential murderer, but as previously mentioned its a measured risk, and we're prepared to take it so that he is happy, comfortable and sleeps well.

DS was on his tummy from about 3 weeks... I gave up in the end, it was the only way he slept for any length of time.

Ironically now he can roll, he prefers it on his back!!
