Transition from cot to bed for a non-sleeping 2 year old

DS is the worlds worse sleeper. We have literally tried everything and I mean everything. Gradual withdrawal, CC, Co-sleeping, we even paid millpond £350 but to no avail.

Last night was a particular low and he climbed out the cot twice. He finally went to sleep at 1am in our bed and was up at 5.30 this morning.

I now have to buy him a bed but have no idea how to keep him in there. I have visions of never sleeping again. Anybody managed it?!

My DS hated his cot, we used to have to sneak him in asleep then he'd come in with us when he inevitably woke. A toddler bed at 18 months totally transformed his sleep and he started both going to sleep in his bed and staying asleep in his bed. We used a travel bed guard to stop him falling out but it also weirdly kept him in. Took him a good 18 months to work out he could move it.

Thanks, that gives me hope. He escaped again last night from the cot.
Really hoping the bed transition may be the start of a new sleep era.

The bed has guards attached which may keep him in fingers crossed.

I wouldn't bother with a bed guard on a toddler bed. He's not going to hurt himself falling out and if he can escape from a cot then a bed guards not going to contain him.

My dd's sleep was made no worse once she was in a bed but we did keep a gate on her door for the first 6months. Not sure if this would stop your son at all?

Ours would wake up when he fell out Tarka then we'd have to go in to put him back. The bed guard thing was really weird, he'd climb in and out during the day if it was up but would just lie there waiting for us in the morning (which he nevwr did in the cot). It was weird.

I have a gate ready in case we need it, although if can get out the cot, I wonder if he could climb over the gate too.

I do think we will need some sort of bed guard as he's fallen out of our bed several times Blush

Dream tubes do the trick for the transition.

Another trick is to pop a swimming woggle under the fitted sheet.

Just to update the bed transition is going pretty well at night. He's not worked out he can get out yet Grin

I cannot for the life of me get him to nap in bed during the day though.
Any ideas or should I just abandon the bed and use the buggy?

I work full time, so it's just weekend naps at home and he refuses to drop off.

Why not just stick with the buggy for naps if that works? Makes naps more flexible anyway (my DD will only nap properly in her cot, which is really restrictive)

I have today as it's a complete non starter. I think he's a bit confused as he went to bed tonight saying 'oh nap time' Confused

Let hope he sleeps for more than an hour...

I've just started a similar thread. I know it's too hot for bedding at the moment but will you be using a duvet or sleeping bag?

Superworm · 07/08/2014 21:58

He's got a duvet, which is new as he's been in a grow bag until now. He LOVES it. Climbs into bed every night and pulls it up over himself and tucks his teddies in.
